Management Techniques for Strawberry Cultivation in the Mid-to-Late Stage

After the Spring Festival, the first crop of strawberries in the greenhouse has been harvested, and strawberry production enters the mid-to-late stage. In terms of management, in addition to strengthening pest and disease control and properly controlling temperature and humidity, the most important thing is to do a good job of fertilizing and watering in the late stage. The following are problems that easily arise in production and suggestions for them.

Uneven Irrigation

The reason is that to save water and reduce humidity in the greenhouse, some farmers use drip irrigation. When irrigating in this way, the greenhouse temperature does not drop too quickly, reducing the occurrence of strawberry diseases and thereby increasing strawberry yield. However, due to water quality, in the later stage some drip outlets often become clogged, causing uneven irrigation and affecting the flowering, fruiting and enlargement of strawberries.

Management MeasuresAccording to practical experience in recent years, in late-stage irrigation, changing drip irrigation to flood irrigation under the film is a relatively reasonable method. The specific operation method of under-film irrigation is to uncover the film between two beds, place the sprinkler head directly into the furrow under the film, and irrigate with a large amount of water until thoroughly soaked. This method of irrigation allows water to be drawn upward from the base of the strawberry roots, reducing soil compaction caused by irrigation, and under-film irrigation can relatively reduce the number of irrigations, saving both labor and effort. Generally, for clay soil, watering and fertilizing once every 15-20 days is sufficient, and for sandy soil, once every 10-15 days.

Strawberry Nutrient Deficiency

After entering the second fruiting period, some strawberries show signs of nutrient deficiency. If nutrient supply is not strengthened at this time, it is easy to affect the yield and quality of the second crop of fruit. Moreover, the flowering period is not suitable for foliar fertilization, which adds a certain degree of difficulty to fertilization.

Management MeasuresAlong with irrigation, increase the application of high-efficiency strawberry-specific trace element fertilizers such as Strawberry Pioneer, Pen Shi Bao, and monopotassium phosphate, increase soil organic matter content, supplement missing trace elements such as manganese, molybdenum, zinc, and calcium, and increase the supplement of high-efficiency phosphorus and potassium fertilizers. The application method is to apply the diluted high-efficiency fertilizer evenly with the water during irrigation. Generally, 25 kg of special fertilizer is applied per mu.

Severe Pest Damage

As the temperature rises, pests such as aphids increase relatively, seriously affecting the quality of strawberries.

Management MeasuresPrevent in advance by hanging one sticky insect board every 2 m in the greenhouse, which can reduce the occurrence of aphids. For plots where damage has already occurred, after picking strawberries, aerosol fumigation can be used to kill the pests. During the specific operation, care should be taken to first move the bees used for pollination outside the greenhouse to prevent harm to the bees. All ventilation openings should be sealed well, and the aerosol fumigant should be ignited in the evening, followed by ventilation and air exchange the next morning.
