Professor Chen Xiaoling of Dayeh University Appointed General Manager of China Chemical Health Biotechnology, Strengthening Links Between the Department of Bioresources and Industry
(Taiwan TB News Network / Reporter Liu Zhicheng) Professor Chen Xiaoling of the Department of Bioresources at Dayeh University has long partnered with China Chemical & Pharmaceutical Co. on industry-academia collaboration, and her R&D strength is highly favored by China Chemical & Pharmaceutical, which seconded her to serve as general manager of its newly established subsidiary, China Chemical Health Biotechnology. By stepping into industry, Professor Chen Xiaoling has accelerated the link between the university and industry. During the summer vacation, as the Biotechnology Exhibition opened in Taipei, students from the College of Bioresources visited the venue, helped promote the China Chemical Health Biotechnology booth, and gained experience in industry and marketing.
Professor Chen Xiaoling, general manager of China Chemical Health Biotechnology, believes that while the Ministry of Science and Technology injects funding to subsidize university research and universities hold many technologies and patents, a patent is just a piece of paper if it cannot be applied in industry. Talent and technology leaving campus helps open up new paths for industry, so she resolutely accepted the invitation from China Chemical Health Biotechnology to serve as general manager. This opportunity for close industry-academia linkage not only commercializes R&D results but also provides job opportunities for graduates.
⟧ Professor Chen Xiaoling said that the market for health foods is enormous, but more than 70 percent of raw materials in Taiwan, China rely on imports. To be more competitive in the international market, one should have one's own materials and one's own technology. With this in mind, China Chemical & Pharmaceutical began industry-academia collaboration with the university in the 96th year of the Republic of China (2007), investing in the development of novel health food materials, researching and manufacturing kefir functional peptides for fighting hypertension and delaying osteoporosis, and this year established the subsidiary China Chemical Health Biotechnology, recruiting health food talent from universities and colleges and making "milk fermentation peptides" the company's specialty.
Xie Qihong, a doctoral student in the Doctoral Degree Program in Biotechnology, said that the Biotechnology Exhibition is very large in scale and is an annual event for industry, and visiting it let them see the diverse facets of the biotechnology industry and reflect on what they need to strengthen during their studies. In addition to observing the China Chemical Health Biotechnology booth led by Professor Chen Xiaoling, the teacher also provided an opportunity for everyone to try introducing products to visitors and practice presenting professionally, which was different from classroom and laboratory learning, and they gained a lot.
Sun Fangjun, head of the Department of Bioresources at Dayeh University, pointed out that Professor Chen Xiaoling and R&D Director Chen Quanmu of National Chung Hsing University led research teams from the two universities in industry-academia collaboration with China Chemical & Pharmaceutical, and the related R&D results not only obtained patents in the Republic of China, the United States, Germany and France, but in the 101st year of the Republic of China (2012) also won the Silver Medal of the Invention Award of the "National Invention and Creation Award," and were transferred to China Chemical & Pharmaceutical.
China Chemical Health Biotechnology, approved in March of this year to move into the Central Taiwan Science Park, specifically drew on Professor Chen Xiaoling's R&D energy and hired her as general manager, adding another success to domestic industry-academia alliance development of key new technologies. The product series was grandly launched at this year's Biotechnology Exhibition, and faculty and students from the department also went north together to attend, observe Professor Chen Xiaoling's outstanding R&D results, and give students a new experience of industry linkage.
