Use the wrong flower pot for your plants and no matter how you care for them, they just won't survive - no wonder you're a plant killer
Tall pots prevent root rot
In our previous discussion topics, whenever the subject of hard-to-grow flowers came up, many gardening friends would say orchids, camellias, and gardenias. They usually suffer from yellowing leaves and dropping buds caused by root rot, and it seems like every pot you buy dies - it's really frustrating!
These flowers are all afraid of waterlogging. I've said before to water them less, but sometimes you haven't even watered much, so why do they rot? It's actually because the pot wasn't chosen well. With an ordinary shallow pot, after watering, the roots can't absorb all the water at once, so the leftover water accumulates in the pot, and once the roots sit in water, they start to rot.
So even though they're just small plants, we should still choose tall pots. When you water them, whatever they can't drink sinks down below - it saves effort and prevents root rot. Choose the right pot and you'll save yourself a lot of worry later.
Wide-mouthed shallow pots are good for a full, bursting display
This year I've also recommended quite a few flowers that are easy to grow into a full, bursting pot. Some gardening friends planted them and said they really are easy to grow, but why didn't mine burst into a full pot? When they sent pictures, it turned out the pots weren't chosen well. Straight-sided pots have a limited diameter, sunlight is blocked, and the health of the seedlings is uneven - only a few strong branches end up blooming.
With seedlings grown directly from seed, the strong ones thrive and the weak ones die off, and they're also prone to getting leggy and losing their shape. Shaping them into a ball by pruning is also difficult. In short, if the preparation work isn't done well upfront, it's very hard to get a full, bursting pot later.
So for flowers that easily burst into a full pot, like geraniums, petunias, pansies, and baby's breath, it's best to choose wide-mouthed shallow pots. Scatter the seeds and you'll get a full pot - without much pruning, they'll burst into a ball shape!
Hanging pots make plants grow fast
The more plants you have at home, the more they multiply, until there's no room left on the floor. And crowding them together affects light exposure and blocks ventilation - poor ventilation is the biggest taboo in gardening. It's best to arrange them at different heights, with some hanging and some on the floor. This not only saves space but also helps the flowers grow.
We usually hang up vining plants like pothos, string of pearls, and string of tears. Hanging them up gives good ventilation and makes them less likely to turn yellow. Many gardening friends have trouble with indoor ventilation, so it's best to hang them up too, which helps them grow quickly and climb!
But gardening friends will ask again: how do you water them? Most pots don't have a water storage device, so forcibly hanging them up really makes watering a big problem.
We can make a simple lazy-person watering bottle. If you have a glue bottle at home, gardening friends can just wash it clean and use it - fill it with water and insert it upside down into the pot. You can also use a mineral water bottle with a drip nozzle tied to the mouth, or simply insert a chopstick to channel the water.
The most convenient option is to directly choose a hanging pot with a built-in water reservoir. This kind of pot has a water storage layer at the bottom - one watering can last 1-2 weeks, and it hangs stably without being easily blown around by wind.
For gardening friends who feel hanging pots are too risky, you can also choose more stable wall-mounted pots. They can be hung on screens and partition walls, and they also come with a water storage layer~
Gardening friends living in apartment buildings no longer need to worry about not being able to grow succulents outdoors - one wall-mounted pot solves it all. And in summer, a nested pot can also provide heat insulation - two benefits in one!
Mesh-bottom pots can grow multiple kinds of flowers
I've seen many gardening masters grow several kinds of flowers in one pot, making it look like a small garden. Mixed planting not only requires a big enough pot, but also demands good breathability and drainage from the pot. Otherwise, it's hard to please everyone - one flower in the pot dies of thirst while another is still waterlogged!
When mixing plants, it's best to first consider the habits of the different flowers. If one likes dry conditions and another likes wet ones, it's best not to grow them together. But even if their habits are similar, you still need to pick a good pot - after all, man proposes but heaven disposes, and one slip-up means they're dead.
Traditional pots have only one hole at the bottom, which is no longer enough for mixed planting. It's best if the bottom has enough open area - not just for breathability, but also for drainage. This kind of pot is suitable for both flowers and vegetables.
Plastic pots are more suitable for summer
For growing plants, we generally use ceramic pots or plastic pots. Both have advantages and disadvantages, and everyone can choose according to their own needs:
Ceramic pot pros and cons: breathable, attractive, has texture, heavy, fragile, evaporates quickly in summer
Plastic pot pros and cons: lightweight, durable, good moisture retention, affordable, heats up quickly
From the above, plastic pots are more suitable for summer. After all, plants dry out easily in summer, and ceramic pots evaporate too fast - the roots run out of water in no time, and combined with the heat, the plants die even faster!
Nowadays technology updates quickly, and plastic pots have started using PP resin material, which is more eco-friendly and breathable. They've also added a breathable water-barrier layer at the bottom, and the price is more affordable than ceramic - so everyone can choose with confidence~
