New tips for safely overwintering young persimmon trees

Irrigation with freezing water. Before the soil freezes, around mid-to-late November, irrigate once with freezing water. This can increase the tree's cold resistance and reduce the occurrence of shoot dieback and freeze damage.

Whitewashing the trunk. Common whitewash formula: 30 parts water, 9 parts quicklime, 1.5 parts lime sulfur concentrate, 1.5 parts salt, 0.5 parts animal and vegetable oil, 1 part Hushu Jiangjun.

Soil burial method. (1) Above-ground soil burial method. Gently bend the tree over and lay it flat on the ground along the row, tie it into a bundle with straw rope, and cover it directly with soil, with a thickness of 40cm as appropriate. (2) Underground soil burial method. Dig a trench between rows, with the trench size determined by the bent-over tree body, tie the main and side branches to the central leader and place them in the trench, then cover with soil, with the soil thickness rising 20cm above the ground as appropriate. The soil burial method is only suitable for 1-2a old young trees.

Spray cold protection agents. Spraying Xingao Zhimo and Hushu Jiangjun can form a protective film on the tree surface, reduce transpiration, and improve cold resistance. In mid-February and mid-March, spray Cuhuawang No. 3 once each time to force the nutrients in the shoot tips to flow back and prevent shoot dieback, with remarkable results.

Scientific winter pruning. During winter pruning, cutting off part of the autumn shoots can reduce water evaporation, improve the branches' resistance to freezing and drought, and prevent Cicadella viridis from laying eggs on the branches and trunks, so as to avoid shoot dieback. Wounds caused by pruning should be promptly coated with wound healing and antiseptic film to protect the growth of wound healing tissue and prevent pathogens from infecting through the wounds.
