Techniques for Cultivating Edible Fungi with Wheat Straw

The technique of cultivating edible fungi with wheat straw uses crushed and fermented wheat straw to grow edible fungi. Its advantages are that it can achieve relatively high economic benefits, and after use, the culture medium can also be used as high-quality organic fertilizer and returned to the field. According to the temperature, humidity and climate environment of our town, this cultivation method can be used indoors and outdoors in spring, summer and autumn. In winter, it must be carried out indoors on the premise of ensuring temperature.

1. Wheat straw treatment. Crush the wheat straw, spray with water and mix it wet, pile it into a round heap with a diameter of 1 m-1.8 m, press it firmly, cover it with plastic film and ferment for 4 days-6 days. After fermentation, the wheat straw should maintain a moisture content of about 70% and a pH value of about 8.

2. Site selection and cultivation. The selected site should avoid direct sunlight. Before inoculation, make a wooden mold frame of 70 cm * 20 cm * 35 cm. First spread a layer of fermented wheat straw powder inside the frame, tread it firm, and then sprinkle a ring of edible fungi spawn and bran around it; then spread another layer of straw powder, and again sprinkle spawn and bran. Spread 4 layers in total, and sprinkle 3 layers of spawn and bran. The amount used must ensure air permeability. Generally, each culture medium block uses 5 kg-7.5 kg of wheat straw powder and 0.25 kg-0.38 kg of edible fungi spawn and bran, and finally cover with a layer of plastic film.

3. Spawn running and culture. During the mycelial growth period, the requirements for temperature, humidity and air permeability must be met. The temperature should be controlled at about 35°C. In summer, when the temperature exceeds 40°C, the film should be uncovered to lower the temperature. The moisture content of the culture medium should preferably be controlled at 70%. Generally, no water spraying is needed, so as to avoid contamination by foreign microorganisms.

4. Post-harvest treatment. The fruiting bodies of young mushrooms can be harvested once they have fully grown. Generally, 3 crops-4 crops of edible fungi can be harvested, and afterward the culture medium can be applied back to farmland as high-quality organic fertilizer.
