Precautions for deworming pigs

1. Choose the right deworming drugs. Deworming drugs for nematodes include levamisole, trichlorfon, tetramisole hydrochloride, and piperazine; drugs for flukes include nitrophenol and bithionol; drugs for cysticercus include praziquantel; and drugs for toxoplasmosis include pyrimethamine and sulfonamides. No matter which drug is chosen, it is best to switch to another one after using it for a period of time, so as to avoid drug resistance and affect the deworming effect.

2. Grasp the appropriate deworming timing. Deworming pigs requires not only the right medicine for the right symptoms, but also attention to the timing of administration. Administering the drug too early will fail to achieve the deworming effect, while too late will affect the pig's development and form a runt pig. The deworming time should be determined according to the type of parasite, its development, and the season. Under normal circumstances, the first deworming of pigs is best carried out when the pig weighs about 30 kg, so that multiple parasites can be eliminated at once.

3. Proper deworming method. Before feeding the deworming medicine, let the pig skip one meal, mix the medicine evenly with the feed at 7-8 pm, and let the pig eat it all at once. If the pig does not eat, a small amount of salt water or saccharin can be added to the feed to enhance palatability.

4. Fully disinfect the pig pen. After deworming, clean up the feces in time and pile them for fermentation, burn them, or bury them deeply; the floor, walls, and feed troughs should be disinfected with 5% lime water to prevent the expelled parasites and eggs from being eaten by pigs again and causing reinfection.

5. Carefully observe the deworming effect. If the pig shows poisoning, such as vomiting, diarrhea, and other symptoms, it should immediately be driven out of the pen and allowed to move freely to relieve the poisoning; in severe cases, let it drink half-cooked mung beans and their soup; for those with diarrhea, take 50 grams of charcoal or pot-bottom soot, mix it into the feed and administer it, and it will heal after 2-3 consecutive days. If the deworming effect is poor, you can switch to the Chinese herbal medicine Rangoon creeper (Quisqualis indica). For small pigs of 10-15 kg, feed 5-8 seeds each time; for pigs of 20-40 kg, feed 10-20 seeds each time. At the same time, grind raw pumpkin seeds into a paste, mix it into a small amount of feed and feed it to the pigs, for 2 consecutive times, using 2 grams per kg of body weight.
