How to feed cattle scientifically? Six techniques to master

Six techniques for scientific cattle feeding

Clever arrangement of feed quantity

In winter, the days are short and the nights are long. Not only should cattle be fed well during the day, but an extra feed should be given at night, with 13~15 kg of grass fed per day.

Clever matching of forage

In winter, cattle feeding should be as diverse as possible in forage, pairing short grass with long grass and high-quality grass with lower-grade grass, such as wheat straw and rice straw paired with green hay, peanut vines, alfalfa, etc. When mixed evenly, cattle like to eat it.

Clever treatment of straw

Single forage and lack of nutrition easily lead to cattle losing condition and becoming thin, while ammoniated forage is soft, aromatic and easy to digest. If straw is treated with ammonia, cattle not only like to eat it but also gain condition easily.

Clever addition of urea feeding

Urea is an important measure for supplementing protein and can be fed in appropriate amounts in winter. Generally, calves over 6 months old are fed 40~60 grams per day, fattening cattle are fed 70~100 grams per day, and adult cows are fed 150 grams per day. Urea has poor palatability, so it can be mixed with concentrate at one percent and then mixed with grass for feeding. Cattle must not drink water within half an hour after feeding.

Clever matching of feed materials

When feeding concentrate, soft and hard feeds should be paired. Hard feeds such as corn and soybeans and soft feeds such as bran and powder feed should be arranged in sequence when feeding. Start by feeding grass, add a little feed when the cattle are more than half full, add more feed when they are about to be full, and add aromatic feed, such as roasted and ground soybeans mixed into the grass. Although there is no green grass, the cattle can still eat their fill at every meal.

Clever warming of drinking water

In winter, cattle must not be given cold water; they should be given warm water. Ice water should be warmed before being given to cattle to drink.
