Broccoli harvesting techniques

Broccoli differs from cauliflower in that its harvest window is very short, only 1-2 days under high temperature conditions. If not harvested in time, the head will loosen, the small florets will reveal yellow petals, and its commercial value will be reduced. When the head has fully grown, the individual florets have not opened, and the entire head remains firm, intact and bright green, it should be harvested promptly. The harvest standard should be determined according to export requirements. After harvesting the main stem head of broccoli, fertilizer and water management should be strengthened to continue harvesting side shoot heads. If larger main stem heads are to be harvested, side shoots should be removed in time so that nutrients are concentrated for the growth of the main head.

After broccoli is harvested, under high temperature conditions the florets very easily loosen, reveal yellow petals and eventually lose water and wither, losing their commercial value. Therefore, harvesting should be done in the morning, direct sunlight should be avoided, and after packaging the broccoli should be placed in refrigerated truck compartments and transported out for sale as early as possible.
