How to Train a Breeding Boar? Methods and Step-by-Step Guide
The key to training a boar is to arouse the sexual urge of the replacement boar as quickly as possible and complete the full semen collection process. At the same time, because replacement boars are rather timid, even small frights or stimuli can affect the effectiveness and efficiency of training, so special attention must also be paid to minimizing stimulating factors that are unfavorable to training, such as distractions and frights to the boar.
Training of boars should be scheduled away from feeding times and carried out when the pig house is quiet. Each training session for a boar should last between 20 and 30 minutes; if training is unsuccessful, it is best to try again after 3 days. The more times a replacement boar is trained, the harder it becomes to train it successfully, so before each training session, make sure all the preparatory work is done properly, and strive to succeed with the fewest possible sessions. The training location should be the replacement boar's original pen, and an adjustable dummy sow mount should be used for training; only after training is successful should the boar be moved to the semen collection room.
Specific procedure:
The trainer first teases and lures the replacement boar from outside the pen. After 4 to 5 minutes, once the replacement boar becomes excited, adjust the dummy sow mount to its lowest position (practice has proven that the lower the dummy sow mount, the more willing the replacement boar is to mount it), gently place the dummy sow mount into the replacement boar's pen, and the trainer teases and lures the replacement boar until it mounts the dummy sow mount, then nimbly adjusts the replacement boar's posture (be sure not to push or pull forcefully). Stroke the boar's prepuce, and after stimulating the replacement boar's penis to extend out, grasp the extended boar penis's spiral glans with a bare hand, straighten the "S"-shaped bend of the penis along its forward thrusting force, and grip the glans penis tightly to prevent it from rotating. During semen collection, hold the head of the penis between the little finger and the ring finger, and rhythmically loosen and squeeze with the little finger to stimulate the boar to ejaculate. When the boar has finished ejaculating completely and is looking around, the semen collection is finished.
For a boar that has just been successfully trained, semen should be collected again the next day to reinforce its memory and prevent it from forgetting if the interval is too long. For those boars that were trained to allow semen collection but then forgot how to mount the dummy sow mount because of failure to reinforce it in time, the difficulty of retraining is greatly increased compared with the first time, so later reinforcement of semen collection is very necessary. It is recommended to do it once the next day, once on the fifth day, and finally once a week.
Under normal circumstances, boars can be successfully trained with this training method. For boars that still cannot be trained, you can smear the semen of other boars on the dummy sow mount, use a semen collection glove just used for semen collection that carries the scent of another boar and hold it in front of the boar's nose to tease and lure it; stroke the replacement boar's prepuce to stimulate its sexual urge; cover the top of the dummy sow mount with a piece of pig skin, etc. It is not recommended to first let the replacement boar mount an estrous sow for semen collection and then train it to mount the dummy sow mount, because most replacement boars are unwilling to mount the dummy sow mount again after having mounted a sow.
For boars that ultimately cannot be trained, some people suggest injecting testosterone. Apart from cases where the boar's performance is exceptionally outstanding and the goal is to pass its excellent genetic material on to offspring, from the perspective of boar use, the author believes there is not much need for this, because most boars trained this way have very low libido, and after formal semen collection it will be found that they have great difficulty mounting the dummy sow mount and their semen volume is mostly unsatisfactory, so they have little value for retention.
