How to prevent miscarriage in sows

Miscarriage in sows is closely related to the sow's conception status, living environment, feed nutrition and other factors. Therefore, to prevent miscarriage in sows, farmers must take the relevant preventive measures.

1. Timely mating. Sows generally begin to ovulate 24 hours after estrus. Mating is best when the sow changes from an excited state to a quiet state, a white thread-like mucus flows from the vagina, and the sow stands still when her back is pressed by hand. Under these conditions, the embryo mortality rate is low and the sow's farrowing rate is high.

2. Strengthen management of sows before conception. From 3 to 14 days before mating, increase protein feed and energy feed, and add minerals and multiple vitamins at the same time, so that the sow enters the best state for mating more quickly; for thinner sows, nutrition should be strengthened for a longer period before mating, so that they recover as much of their former strength as possible, which helps with mating, conception and maintaining pregnancy, and increases the farrowing rate.

3. Pay attention to feed quality. Do not feed pregnant sows moldy, frozen or otherwise contaminated feed, otherwise the sow is prone to poisoning, which in mild cases causes embryo death and in severe cases affects the sow's life safety. Every month, regularly add 0.1% Xingchao brand "Meijing" to the feed for 5 to 7 days, which can effectively inhibit the growth of mold, prevent feed from becoming moldy and the production of mycotoxins, and ensure feed quality.

4. Appropriate exercise. The embryo mortality rate of sows that do not exercise often during pregnancy is about 0.5% higher than that of sows that exercise regularly. Sows should mainly exercise freely, but care should be taken to prevent sows from falling or colliding with obstacles.

5. Regulate the endocrine system. One week after mating, each sow should be given an intramuscular injection of 30 mg of progesterone, which can effectively reduce embryo mortality and prevent miscarriage in sows.

6. Maintain the environmental temperature. During the first week of pregnancy in sows, when the environmental temperature reaches 30°C to 35°C for a short time (24 hours), embryo mortality increases; similarly, mating with a boar that has been exposed to heat can also cause embryo death. Therefore, the environmental temperature should preferably be controlled at 15°C to 25°C.
