How to keep pigs warm in winter? Practical warmth tips shared
In winter, the temperature drops noticeably, pigs are highly prone to illness, which affects normal growth. If effective methods are adopted to scientifically keep them warm, the occurrence of various respiratory and intestinal diseases can be reduced, promoting healthy fattening of pigs. Here are several methods for your reference:
1. Before winter arrives, cover all doors and windows of the pig house with plastic sheeting to keep it warm and protect against the cold.
2. Add bedding: spread 15 cm to 20 cm thick sawdust, rice husks and dry grass on the pig bed; besides insulation, it also absorbs moisture and removes dampness. Be sure to check and replace urine-soaked dry grass frequently; when pig urine is found, promptly remove the wet grass and replace it with dry grass to keep the pig house dry and comfortable.
3. Add bed boards: during the piglet stage, where conditions permit, it is best to use warm bed boards such as wooden boards, bamboo boards or thickened fiberboards.
4. Increase the lighting area of the pig house: when the pig house is first built, the lighting area should be taken into consideration. Open-style pig houses should have a larger open area so that plastic film can be covered in winter for lighting. Enclosed pig houses should have reserved windows on the south wall and roof for installing glass in winter.
5. Increase stocking density: group together pigs that were raised separately; the number of pigs raised in the house can be increased by 30% to 50% compared with summer, and using the body heat between pigs to keep warm can raise the house temperature.
6. Provide high-quality feed: appropriately increase energy feed such as sorghum and corn, or choose high-quality complete feed produced by reputable manufacturers.
7. Before weaning, for piglets, a small pen of 1 m x 1 m x 1 m can be built in one corner of the pen, with the floor covered with wooden boards or dry grass, and a heat lamp added above.
Doing the above points well can play a crucial role in keeping pigs warm in winter.
