How to improve the fruit-setting rate of eggplants? Master these key techniques
1. Pinching: The fruit-setting pattern of eggplants generally increases as the plant branches, basically setting one fruit per branch. For example, the first fruit is mostly one, the second tier is two, the third tier is four, and the fourth tier is eight. Therefore, in management, this characteristic should be fully utilized by pinching promptly after transplanting to promote rapid branching, increase the fruiting positions, and improve the fruit-setting rate.
2. Promoting weak plants and controlling vigorous growth: Weak eggplant plants with insufficient nutrition will worsen flower and fruit drop; however, excessive vigor will also cause flower and fruit drop. Therefore, maintaining normal growth (neither vigorous nor weak) is the basic requirement for promoting flower formation and fruit setting in eggplants. Thus, for weak plants, fertilizer and water should be increased to strengthen their growth; for overly vigorous plants, fertilizer and water should be appropriately controlled to restore normal growth and improve the fruit-setting rate. The specific approach is: for weak seedlings, strengthen fertilizer and water management, with organic fertilizer and quick-acting phosphorus as the main early-stage inputs, and switch to quick-acting nitrogen fertilizer in the mid-to-late stages. Preferably, when the first fruit flowers, apply 500-600 kg of decomposed dilute manure or 20-30 kg of cake fertilizer and 15-20 kg of superphosphate per mu. After entering the full fruiting stage, topdressing should shift to quick-acting nitrogen fertilizer as the main input (10-15 kg of urea per mu), applied 3-5 times during the fruiting period. At the same time, attention should be paid to watering in conjunction with topdressing. For overly vigorous seedlings, the stems can be pinched and damaged during the flowering stage to promote the accumulation of photosynthetic products and promote fruit setting; root damage through cultivation can also weaken the plant's ability to absorb nutrients and water, thereby moderating growth and promoting fruit setting.
3. Hormone treatment: Spraying flowers with 20 ppm of 4-CPA during the flowering stage, or dipping flowers with 30-40 ppm of 2,4-D, can both achieve the purpose of preventing flower and fruit drop and improving the fruit-setting rate.
