Eggplant pruning and branch-cutting techniques to promote the growth of large fruit
Eggplants have strong growth vigor and a habit of continuous growth and fruiting. However, as the plant grows larger, the branches increase, the nutrient transport pathways lengthen, and the distribution channels also multiply, so the fruit becomes smaller and smaller, to the point of losing its economic value. Judging from the fruiting pattern commonly described as "four doors, eight-direction wind, starry sky," after the "four doors" stage, that is, during the "eight-direction wind" stage, many eggplants already show noticeably smaller fruit, so eggplant pruning should begin during the "eight-direction wind" stage.
1. Light renewal pruning: For plants that are growing relatively normally and show only mild decline, first thin out the small fruit on the plant, leave a few fruit with better growth, then cut back to a point below the "four doors" where there are obvious vigorous buds, and prune away empty branches and weak slender branches, focusing on keeping 3-4 vigorous buds and training them into fruiting branches, so that nutrients are concentrated on supplying the fruit.
2. Moderate renewal pruning: For plants with moderate decline, many small fruit, no vigorous axillary buds above the second fruit cluster position, and vigorous buds above and below the first fruit cluster position, first remove all the fruit from the plant, then cut back from a point above the first fruit cluster, keeping only 1-2 vigorous buds at the lowest part, so that nutrients are concentrated in supply, enabling early growth and early fruiting.
3. Severe renewal pruning: For plants with severe decline showing obvious dehydration and nutrient deficiency, severe renewal pruning should be used, cutting back at the branching point of the two main branches; for those that are especially severely weakened, cut them off at the root to stimulate vigorous branches to bear fruit.
In any case, after pruning, apply heavy water and heavy fertilizer to promote growth. After pruning eggplants, to prevent wounds from being infected by pathogens, promptly spray 1 application of chlorothalonil or similar chemicals for protection.
