How to Propagate Portulaca grandiflora? A Detailed Guide to Common Propagation Methods
1. Sowing
The seeds of this flower are extremely small; it takes roughly 8,400 seeds to make up one gram in weight. The method we usually use is to sow them on a seedling tray, cover them lightly with fine vermiculite, or after scattering the seeds, press them down slightly firm to ensure sufficient moisture. The germination temperature is between 21 and 24, and it takes about seven to ten days for the seedlings to emerge. The seedlings are very delicate; if kept under relatively high temperature conditions, they can grow rapidly, and afterward they will form thicker fleshy leaves. At this point, the seedlings can be directly moved into pots; the pots needed are about 10 cm in diameter, and three to five plants can be planted per pot. This way they survive easily, and their growth rate is quite considerable. It is extremely tolerant of soil; ordinary soil can suit it, and well-drained sandy soil is the most suitable. It can spread its own seeds to achieve propagation.
In addition, it has a very long planting window, so spring, summer and autumn are all no problem. The covering of soil is best kept thin; of course, it can also grow without any soil covering. If in Sichuan Province, you can sow in September or October. Before sowing, choose a mu of good farmland, then dig a deep furrow of about 1.3 m; the soil for planting it must be made very level and loose in texture. The seeds need to be mixed with human and animal manure to form seed ash. Five to six grams of seed should be sown per mu. When sowing, some human manure water should be put into the furrow, and then the seed ash scattered in.
2. Cuttings
Cuttings are usually used for double-petaled varieties. When taking cuttings in summer, you can use cut branches, and wilted stems can also be used; once they take root, they will produce flower buds. During its growth it does not need frequent watering; when the fruit matures it will burst open, and the seeds scatter easily, so it needs to be harvested in time. It mainly propagates by seed, and its self-sowing ability is very strong. Since new varieties appeared, collecting its seeds has become more difficult. Especially for double-petaled ones, the flowers do not set seed after blooming. Therefore, at home you can use the cutting method.
3. Division
After collecting seed in summer, dig out the old clumps, select well-grown plants, divide them into small clumps, and with a row spacing of 30 cm, the planting distance needs to be seven to ten cm; after that, we need to water them with livestock manure water.
