Three Clever Ways to Extend the Tomato Harvest Period

After the first round of tomatoes is harvested, you can use the following 3 methods to make the tomato plants bloom and bear fruit again, improving economic returns.

1. The layering method

After the first round of tomatoes has ripened and been harvested, cut away the dead branches and yellow leaves, keep the new shoots with vigorous regrowth ability, and dig a fertilizing trench about 20 cm long and 15 cm deep on one side of the main stem. After applying fertilizer, bury the main stem in the trench, then water it, so that the layered stem quickly takes root. In this way, the new roots and old roots absorb water and nutrients together, the plant grows rapidly in size, and it blooms and bears fruit again.

2. The stem-pruning method

After the first round of tomatoes has been harvested, cut away the dead old branches and leaves, then dig open the soil around the roots and apply fertilizer and water to stimulate new shoots, which grow quickly and bloom and bear fruit again.

3. The transplanting method

Tomato roots easily grow secondary roots, and near the ground surface they can produce a fair number of tiller seedlings. After these tiller shoots are transplanted, they grow and bear fruit quickly, generally setting fruit in 7-10 days. If the ground is dry, you can mound soil around the main stem and water it to encourage secondary tillers to form. When the roots of the tiller shoots show a small amount of white, they can be transplanted and will survive, and they can quickly bloom and bear fruit.
