How to Propagate Cuphea? Methods and Precautions Explained
1. Propagation Methods
The propagation methods of cuphea are the same as those of most flowers: there are two kinds, sowing and cuttings.
If you choose sowing, then you must pay attention to the temperature. Generally speaking, the required temperature is between 15 and 22 degrees Celsius. After planting the seeds in the soil, remember to cover them with a thin layer of fine soil, and be sure to keep them moist. In addition, shade is also essential. The time needed for germination is not long; three to four weeks is enough.
As for cuttings, that also does not take much time. This is a very fast method, and both spring and autumn are quite suitable. The specific method is to use semi-mature branches or terminal buds and insert them into potting soil. The potting soil is generally prepared by mixing perlite, river sand and peat soil, and the branches also have length requirements, generally between 5 cm and 7 cm. Rooting also does not take long; two to three weeks is enough. As for transplanting, you must wait until the roots have grown more.
2. Precautions
The first point we should pay attention to is the soil it lives in. It is best to use sandy soil, and in addition, drainage must be good, because if water accumulates, it can easily cause its root system to rot. You also need to give it sunlight; either sunning it all day or giving it half a day of sun is feasible.
After planting its seedlings properly, be sure to remember to prune, cutting off its top to remove apical dominance, so that other branches can grow more easily. In addition, in spring you should also prune and apply additional fertilizer, so that it can produce more flowers and fruits. In winter, what you must pay attention to is making sure it is in a warm place, because it itself likes a high-temperature environment, and if the temperature is too low in winter, it can easily be killed.
