What are some simple methods for disinfecting flower soil?
1. Sunlight disinfection: Spread the prepared potting soil thinly and evenly on a clean concrete surface, wooden board or sheet metal, and expose it to the sun for 3-15 days to kill large numbers of fungal spores, mycelium, insect eggs, pests and nematodes. Although this method is not completely thorough, it is the most convenient.
2. Steam disinfection: Put the nutrient soil into a steamer or pressure cooker and steam it, heating to 60-100°C for 30-60 minutes (the heating time should not be too long, to avoid killing beneficial microorganisms that decompose fertilizer and affecting soil fertility). This can kill most bacteria, fungi, nematodes and insects, and cause most weed seeds to lose viability.
3. Boiling disinfection: Pour the potting soil into a pot, add water and boil for 30-60 minutes, then drain off the water and dry it to a suitable moisture level.
4. Burning disinfection: For a small amount of soil used for protected seedbeds, cuttings or sowing, it can be placed in an iron pot or on sheet metal and heated over a fire. After the soil particles become dry, burn for another 0.5-1 hour to completely eliminate pests and diseases in the soil.
5. Chemical treatment: At home, different chemicals can be used to fumigate the soil, that is, after sifting the soil, spray a chemical agent over one layer of soil, add another layer of soil, then spray the agent again, finally cover with plastic film and seal for 5-7 days, then open it for ventilation for 3-5 days before use. Commonly used chemicals include formaldehyde, zineb, carbendazim, sulfur powder, etc. Fan Yajing
