How to identify corn seed vigor? Teach you practical methods
1. Visual inspection method. Observe the shape and color of the corn seed embryo with the naked eye. If the embryo is protruding or shriveled and appears dark and lusterless, the seed is fresh and has strong vitality, and can be used as production seed.
2. Seed soaking and germination method. First soak 100 seeds in water for about two hours to allow them to absorb water and swell, place them on moistened blotting paper, cover with moistened blotting paper, and place them in an environment with sufficient oxygen at a room temperature of 10-20°C to let the seeds germinate fully; then divide the number of germinated seeds by 100 and multiply by 100% to obtain the germination rate. Although this measurement method is accurate, it requires 8 days.
3. Red ink staining method. Mix one part commercially available red ink with 19 parts tap water to make a staining agent; randomly select 100 corn seeds, soak them in water for two hours to let them absorb water and swell; use tweezers to peel out the swollen embryo and endosperm one by one; place the treated seeds evenly in a culture vessel, pour in the staining agent until the seeds are submerged, and after staining for 15-20 minutes, pour out the staining agent and rinse the seeds repeatedly with tap water. Dead embryos and endosperm appear dark red, while live embryos are not stained or are slightly light red. Based on this, determine the number of live seeds, then divide by 100 and multiply by 100% to get the germination rate.
4. Visual inspection method. Observe the shape and color of the corn seed embryo with the naked eye. If the embryo is protruding or shriveled and appears dark and lusterless, the seed is fresh and has strong vitality, and can be used as production seed.
