The "Five Don'ts" of Feeding Pigs with Okara

Okara is a good feed for pigs, but feeding it to pigs in large amounts alone can easily cause adverse consequences. Therefore, feeding pigs with okara should adhere to the "Five Don'ts."

Don't feed it raw directly

Raw okara contains toxic substances. Before feeding, it should be heated and boiled for 15 minutes to break down the toxins, enhance palatability, and improve protein absorption and utilization.

Don't overfeed

Okara has low crude protein content and poor quality, so it must be combined with other feeds, generally not exceeding 1/3 of the feed amount. Feeding too much can easily cause indigestion.

Don't feed it as the sole feed

Okara is incomplete in nutrition. It should be paired with a certain proportion of corn, bran and mineral elements, and supplemented with some green feed to meet the pig's growth and development needs.

Don't feed spoiled okara

Okara has high water content. If left for too long, some organic acids will break down, making it prone to decomposition and spoilage. When feeding, keep it as fresh as possible. If there is a slight sour smell, before feeding, add 50 grams of lime powder or baking soda powder per kilogram of okara, stir evenly to neutralize the acetic acid and improve appetite. Severely sour and spoiled okara must not be fed to pigs.

Don't use frozen okara

Feeding pigs with frozen okara can easily cause digestive disorders in pigs. It should be thawed first before feeding.
