Rose Planting Techniques

I. Site Selection and Land Preparation

Choose a sunny, fertile, loose, well-drained loam or sandy loam soil. Before plowing, apply 2500-3000 kg of compost per mu, deep plow 20-25 cm, harrow fine and level, and make high beds 1.5 m wide and about 15 cm high, with 30 cm drainage ditches dug on both sides.

II. Planting

On the prepared bed surface, dig holes at a row spacing of 1.3 m and a plant spacing of 1 m, with a hole depth of 40-50 cm and a hole diameter of 50-60 cm. Loosen the hard soil in the lower layer, apply an appropriate amount of barnyard manure and cake fertilizer as base fertilizer, then cover with 5-10 cm of soil. Then plant the seedling into the hole, spread the root system out flat in all directions so that it extends fully, cover with dry loose crumbled soil, and when half filled, firm it with the foot. After filling with soil, compact it once more, and plant at a depth slightly deeper than the original soil mark. Do not rake the hole surface flat; leave a shallow pit to store water, finally water thoroughly to settle the roots, and cover with a thin layer of fine soil.

Plant after the new buds sprout in early spring until March, and the seedlings must be transplanted with a soil ball; it is not suitable to do this too late, otherwise they will not easily survive. If transplanting after leaf fall and before bud break the following spring, the seedlings can be dug up bare-rooted without a soil ball, but the lateral roots should be no less than 20 cm long, otherwise they will not easily survive.
