Key Points and Precautions for Postpartum Management of Sows
The postpartum period of sows is a very important stage, and our management usually needs to cover the following aspects:
1. Strengthen postpartum care, pay attention to the sow's breathing, body temperature, mental state, and behavioral changes, and prevent unexpected situations from occurring.
2. Postpartum sows should be injected with 4-6 ml of oxytocin to speed up the expulsion of the afterbirth.
3. Within 2-3 days after giving birth, feed the sow some boiled skin soup, eggs, etc.
4. During farrowing, assisted delivery, and the postpartum process, sows often suffer superficial injuries to the reproductive tract and microbial infections, or because the maternal body cannot adapt to the drastic changes of farrowing, postpartum physiological disorders occur, making them prone to various postpartum diseases. Therefore, within 2-3 days after delivery, sows should preferably be given 2-4 injections of penicillin intramuscularly each day to prevent microbial infection of the reproductive tract. For sows that have experienced difficult labor or show obvious symptoms of birth canal injury, antibiotic treatment should be continued.
