How to Reduce Pesticide Residues

Minimize the use of pesticides as much as possible.

Choosing pest- and disease-resistant varieties is the most economical, safe, and effective method for controlling pests and diseases; before sowing, deep plowing the field in midsummer or deep winter can kill some pathogens and insect eggs. Combined with the application of fully decomposed organic fertilizer and strengthened field management after sowing, this creates environmental conditions suitable for crop growth but unfavorable for the occurrence of pests and diseases, and can effectively reduce the incidence of pest damage.

Regulate the scope of pesticide use.

Based on the chemical properties and toxicity of pesticides, the use of pesticide varieties with high acute toxicity, high toxicity, strong bioaccumulation, and long residual activity is prohibited on certain crops. Among them, aldicarb, phorate, and carbofuran can only be used for seed treatment or soil treatment of cottonseed, wheat seed, corn seed, sugar beet seed, etc., and spraying on other crops is strictly prohibited. For phoxim used to control fruit tree pests, it must be applied 30 days before fruit harvest.

Strictly control the application concentration, application rate, formulation type, number of applications, and application method of pesticides.

Among pesticide formulations, emulsifiable concentrates leave the largest residues, followed by wettable powders and emulsion powders, with water-based formulations leaving relatively lower residues. Among application methods, seed treatment, soil treatment, and trunk banding leave higher residues than spraying and dusting. Pay special attention to pesticide application near the crop harvest period: be sure to choose pesticide varieties with low toxicity and rapid decomposition, and strictly control the dosage, application concentration, application method, number of applications, and prohibited time periods.

Strictly observe the last application time before harvest.

According to the pre-harvest interval of various pesticides, and following the principle of early treatment, applying pesticides in advance during the crop growth period, the young larval stage of pests, and the initial infection stage of pathogens can greatly reduce pesticide residues.
