What are the measures to prevent corn lodging

Corn lodging and prevention measures

During the corn growing period, rainstorms accompanied by strong winds are common, which may cause lodging of varying degrees. Based on analysis of different lodging situations, in addition to wind and rain, the following factors can worsen the degree of lodging.

?1. The main causes of lodging are:

1. Variety. Varieties with underdeveloped root systems, tall plants, thin and weak stalks, and insufficient flexibility are prone to lodging. Corn lodging has three types: stalk lodging, root lodging, and stalk breakage

2. Unscientific fertilizer and water management. Applying fertilizer all at once at the seedling stage causes excessive vegetative growth at the corn seedling stage, increases plant height, and makes lodging easy. Or applying large amounts of water and fertilizer at the corn seedling and jointing stages, emphasizing nitrogen over phosphorus, and applying little or no potassium fertilizer can easily cause stalk lodging.

3. Underdeveloped root system. Insufficient phosphate fertilizer leads to poor root growth, or poor land preparation results in shallow root penetration and underdeveloped aerial roots, and once watering is followed by wind or wind and rain together, root lodging occurs.

4. Excessive growth before tasseling. If corn grows excessively before tasseling, the stalk tissue is tender and weak, and breakage occurs when wind blows.

5. Excessive density. One-sided pursuit of high density for increased yield, with too-small plant and row spacing or insufficient thinning, causes crowding between plants, slender internodes, and loose tissue, leading to stalk lodging or stalk breakage.

6. Damage from pests and diseases. Damage to stalks by pests and diseases during the jointing stage or before tasseling can also easily cause lodging.

????2. Ways to prevent corn lodging include:

1. Choose varieties with well-developed prop roots and thick stalks. First, according to the variety's characteristics, choose varieties with well-developed prop roots, thick internodes below the ear, robust plants, and good flexibility.

2. Reasonable close planting. Based on soil fertility and variety characteristics, plant at a reasonable density and make full use of light energy, which can reduce lodging caused by few and shallow roots and overly long internodes.

3. Rational fertilization. According to the planned corn yield and the soil's fertilizer supply, apply formula fertilization with nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium, and combined with the corn nutrient requirement patterns, determine the appropriate timing and amount of fertilization, which can effectively prevent lodging. Apply sufficient base fertilizer and seed fertilizer, and focus nitrogen fertilizer use at the large trumpet stage. On the basis of ensuring sowing quality, appropriately control seedling growth at the seedling stage and increase the application of phosphorus and potassium fertilizers.

4. Spray regulators to promote thicker stalks. For varieties with fragile and easily broken stalks, chemical treatment methods can be adopted, such as spraying corn growth regulator or Jindele, to carry out chemical control treatment on corn stalks at the jointing stage.

5. Timely prevention and control of pests and diseases. Pay close attention to the prevention and control of corn borer, armyworm, and red spider mite, and once pests and diseases occur, control them promptly.
