Key points to note when raising chickens

Move the chicken-raising site to the mountains (or an orchard), away from villages: fewer diseases, feed savings, and faster growth, but pay attention to the following four points

1. Site selection The chicken farm should be chosen in a mountain hollow sheltered from the wind and facing the sun, with grass and trees; the trees provide shade and coolness, and the grass can be foraged. Build a simple chicken coop in a dry place that is warm in winter and cool in summer.

2. Feeding Raise them at home for 30-45 days, then move them to the mountains to raise, for a higher survival rate. During the day, let the chickens out to move around, bask in the sun, and forage. Feed them half-full at breakfast and lunch to encourage their foraging enthusiasm, and feed them full at dinner. The trough should have a wide bottom and a small opening, with an inward-curled edge nailed onto the opening; this not only prevents the chickens' beaks from hooking out the feed, but also prevents the chickens from getting into the trough to poop and scratch out the feed. In summer, from nightfall to 10 o'clock at night, hang an electric light 1 m above the flat ground of the chicken coop to attract insects to feed the chickens. If there is no electricity, hang a kerosene lamp. Provide plenty of clean drinking water.

3. Management The chicken coop should be warm in winter and cool in summer. Pay extra attention to the invasion of a "late spring cold snap." At night, let the chickens return to the coop to spend the night. Clean out the chicken droppings every morning. You can raise a dog to guard against wild animals.

4. Disease prevention When chicks are 7 days out of the shell, use Newcastle disease strain II vaccine for nasal drops, 1 drop in each nostril per chicken; at 60 days of raising, use Newcastle disease strain I vaccine and fowl cholera vaccine for injection, 1 ml per chicken, to prevent fowl plague and fowl cholera. Use half vinegar and half cool boiled water, or dissolve 1 tablet of furazolidone in 500 g of cool boiled water, and let the chickens drink it; you can also stuff soybeans into a fresh pig gallbladder, tie the opening tightly, and air-dry it. For 1-month-old chickens, half a pill per chicken; for 2-month-old chickens, 2-3 pills per chicken, used alternately, which is very effective in preventing and treating pullorum disease. Li Zhiwei
