Post-harvest management of chestnuts: focus on 3 points

1. Deep plowing and soil preparation improves soil permeability, and can also turn surface pests deep into the soil to suffocate them and reduce pest and disease damage. It stimulates new root growth and strengthens root function. When deep plowing, be careful not to injure the tree roots. While turning the soil, soil and water conservation facilities should also be put in place to prevent soil erosion during the rainy season.

2. Apply sufficient base fertilizer. Base fertilizer is generally applied from late September to early October, by digging a ring-shaped trench along the outer edge of the canopy and fertilizing, mainly with decomposed organic fertilizer, combined with balanced application of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium fertilizers. Generally, each mature tree is given 15-20 kg, combined with photosynthetic nutrient film fertilizer, to help chestnut trees absorb light energy, improve fertilizer efficiency, facilitate root absorption, and restore tree vigor as soon as possible.

3. Shaping and pruning, mainly removing basal shoots and disordered branches, low-hanging branches and overlapping branches, overly dense branches, dead branches, withered branches, diseased and pest-infested branches, etc., to promote good ventilation and light penetration in the canopy and reduce disease damage. Apply wound-healing antiseptic film promptly to pruning cuts to protect the wounds, help them heal quickly, and prevent pathogen infection.
