Autumn management of hawthorn requires careful attention, and getting the details right is key
Shaping and pruning.
A natural open-center layered tree form is preferable. The pruning principle is to place equal emphasis on thinning and heading back, keeping large branches sparse and small branches dense, with no overlapping or crossing, for three-dimensional fruiting. Among overlapping, twin, crossing and competing branches, remove the poorer ones, and cut out diseased and pest-infested branches, dead branches and thin, weak fruiting branches. Wounds from pruning should promptly be protected with healing and anti-decay membrane to protect the growth of healing tissue at the wound, prevent infection by rot-causing pathogens, prevent contamination by soil and rainwater, prevent freezing and prevent the wound from drying and cracking, so as to reduce nutrient consumption and improve flower quality and fruit set rate.
Scientific management.
Prevent premature leaf drop. While carrying out disease and pest control, irrigate appropriately during drought, and spray the leaves with a 600-fold dilution of Xin Gao Zhi Mo (new high-fat membrane), which can prevent viral infection of the leaves and prevent premature leaf drop that would affect normal fruiting next year and the improvement of quality.
Apply base fertilizer in autumn.
After rain has thoroughly moistened the soil, apply base fertilizer as a top dressing. Dig parallel trenches on both sides of the tree at the drip line, apply 3-5 jin of organic fertilizer or bio-organic fertilizer per plant, and spray the leaves with photosynthetic nutrient membrane fertilizer, which can help the plant absorb large amounts of light fertilizer, light energy and light, is compatible with conventional fertilizers, and supplies nutrients to support plant growth and development to the limit. One application benefits the whole year.
Disease and pest control.
Hawthorn fruit trees are prone to damage from powdery mildew, aphids, globose scale insects and lepidopteran larvae in autumn and early winter. For this reason, spray once in autumn with an insecticide and fungicide, combined with foliar fertilizer, to promote flowering, etc. During the leaf-drop dormant period, spray the whole orchard once with Hu Shu Jiang Jun (tree protection general) to thoroughly eliminate overwintering sources of diseases and pests.
