What precautions should be taken when inoculating alfalfa with rhizobia
Although inoculating with rhizobia can improve the yield and quality of alfalfa, the method of applying the inoculant directly affects the inoculation effect, and thereby affects the growth and yield of alfalfa. Therefore, when using rhizobia inoculants, the following factors must be considered:
1. Soil conditions.
In an area where a certain legume has never been grown or has not been grown for more than 5 years (a so-called new area), it is very difficult for the soil to contain rhizobia matching that legume, and therefore nitrogen-fixing root nodules will not form on the roots of that legume. Thus, when planting alfalfa in a new area, it is essential to inoculate with a matching rhizobia inoculant in order to show the advantages of symbiotic nitrogen fixation. In addition, on sandy or nutrient-poor soils, inoculating with rhizobia can also effectively improve alfalfa growth and increase soil fertility. Conversely, on soil where alfalfa has been continuously grown, inoculating with rhizobia can also increase yield, but the increase is not large.
2. The compatibility between rhizobia and alfalfa.
Generally speaking, only inoculation with a rhizobia inoculant that has good compatibility with that alfalfa variety can achieve a yield increase; if compatibility is poor, inoculating with rhizobia will have no yield-increasing effect. Generally, if the alfalfa being inoculated comes from the United States or Canada, inoculating with imported rhizobia will have a very obvious yield-increasing effect; if it comes from other countries, strict field trials are needed to determine this.
3. Fertilization level.
The level of nitrogen application directly affects the amount of nodulation in alfalfa: a high nitrogen application rate inhibits the formation of root nodules, while a low nitrogen application rate slightly promotes it. Phosphate fertilizer can improve root growth and thereby promote nodule formation. Only by comprehensively considering the above factors and inoculating with rhizobia according to the ecological and environmental conditions of the planting area can the yield and quality of alfalfa be improved and producers obtain good economic returns.
