How to fatten pheasants? Master five key steps
1. Fair feeding: If feeding with raw grains, the proportion of energy feed such as corn and sorghum can be appropriately increased (recommended formula: 15% wheat, 40% corn, 15% rapeseed cake, 5% wheat bran, 4% rice bran, 20% roasted peas, 1% bone meal, plus 2.5 kg of salt and an appropriate amount of trace elements per ton of feed); if buying domestic chicken feed, you can buy broiler growth feed for feeding. Ensure adequate drinking water, and in addition you can add 10%-20% green feed. Carry out a sand bath at least once a week, spraying a 2% trichlorfon solution into river sand to kill external parasites.
2. Control density: In the initial stage (5-11 weeks of age), raise 10-12 birds per sq m, and afterward group them by strength, sex, and size for rearing, gradually reducing the density to 6-8 birds per sq m. At the same time, enough feed troughs should be set up so that they can eat evenly and grow uniformly.
3. Set up perches and prevent pecking vice: Perches should be placed inside and outside the fattening pheasant house for the pheasants to rest on, which not only makes full use of the breeding space but also helps reduce pecking vice. In high-density rearing, pheasants easily develop feather pecking, vent pecking, and so on. If a pheasant with pecking injuries is found, it should be taken out, and gentian violet or camphor ointment should be applied to the wound, and it should be raised in isolation. When necessary, regulate the pheasant flock:
1) Hang green grass or green vegetables in the house to lure the pheasants into pecking the vegetables and distract them from feather pecking, while also supplementing cellulose and vitamins;
2) At 9-11 weeks of age, 1% feather meal can be added to the feed;
3) Increase the salt in the feed to 2.5%, or add salt to the drinking water, and ensure an adequate water supply. Of course, to avoid pecking injuries, timely beak trimming during the chick stage is also very important.
4. Prevent startling and flying: Keep the site as quiet as possible and decline visitors, so as to reduce the influence of external factors. To prevent injuries or deaths from collision caused by startling and flying, the primary flight feathers on one side of the pheasants can be cut off; the net house should not be built too high.
5. Do a good job in epidemic prevention: The pheasant house should be cleaned every day, and the pens should be disinfected once a week with disinfectants such as Baizhensha. At 8-9 weeks of age, carry out drinking-water vaccination with Newcastle disease strain II vaccine (at 2 times the injection dosage). During the fattening period, if there is continuous rainy weather, 0.04% oxytetracycline or other antibiotics should be added to the feed to prevent the occurrence of fowl cholera or coccidiosis. Generally, administer the drug for 1 week, stop for 1 week, and then administer it for another 1 week to achieve the preventive purpose.
