Key Points for Boar Castration Surgery

1. Castration of young boars. After cleaning the scrotum with 2% Lysol, use the middle finger of the left hand to press and bend the testicle, and use the thumb and index finger to fix the base of the scrotum, keeping the skin of the scrotal area taut. Hold the knife in the right hand and make an incision 2 cm beside the scrotal raphe to squeeze out the testicle. After releasing the left hand from pinching the junction of the testicle and the spermatic cord, use the right hand to tear off the white tendon of the tunica vaginalis ligament and pull the testicle outward. After the left hand returns the tunica vaginalis and the tunica vaginalis ligament back into the scrotum, fix the spermatic cord. At this point, release the testicle with the right hand and scrape back and forth on the spermatic cord until the spermatic cord breaks, then squeeze out the white fluid from the preputial sac. When removing the testicle on the other side, cut through the scrotal septum at the original incision to expose the other testicle, and remove it according to the method described above.

2. Castration of adult boars. The surgical method for adult boars is basically the same as that for young boars, but the restraint method is different. When restraining an adult boar, the boar should be placed in left lateral recumbency, and a dedicated person should press down on the boar's hip while pulling the boar's right hind leg forward.

3. Castration of cryptorchid boars. Cryptorchid boars are commonly known among farmers as "wandering testicle pigs," referring to boars whose testicles are not located in the scrotum. Cryptorchid testicles are generally located behind the kidneys, and sometimes in the inguinal region. The appropriate time for castration surgery for such boars is 2-6 months. Restraint of cryptorchid boars generally uses the inverted suspension or semi-supine position. The surgical method is roughly the same as the methods described above, but the selection of the surgical site is more complex, generally divided into two situations: First, cryptorchidism behind the kidney. Make an incision 2 cm at the intersection point of a perpendicular line drawn from the tuber coxae to the ventral midline. Second, cryptorchidism in the inguinal region. The incision is generally made in the iliac region, pubic region, inguinal region, or the lumbar region behind the kidney.

4. Scrotal hernia surgery. After routine disinfection of the surgical site, first move the small intestine located in the scrotum back into the abdominal cavity, then incise the scrotal wall. When incising the scrotal wall, be careful not to cut through the tunica vaginalis. After stripping the tunica vaginalis to the external ring of the inguinal canal, grasp the tunica vaginalis and testicle, twist the spermatic cord several turns, pass a needle with sterilized silk thread transversely for ligation, and tear off the spermatic cord and tunica vaginalis on the outer side of the ligation site. The surgery is complete.
