Do this one small thing before potting flowers, and they will grow more vigorously after potting

This is day 917 of Lanyao's daily original article
Excerpt from the "30 Days from Zero Basics to Flower-Growing Expert" series
Yesterday I talked about how to repot rhododendrons. In fact, when repotting most potted flowers, we do not need to handle them that way.
On the contrary, we should pay even more attention to keeping the original root ball intact. Of course, this also depends on the situation. How to repot herbaceous flower seedlingsFor example, we often buy small flower seedlings online. Lanyao myself often buys plug seedlings of herbaceous flowers. These seedlings are very small, and after they arrive, the small seedlings need to be moved into slightly larger pots for growing.
Plug seedlingsFor generally smaller plug seedlings, Lanyao plants them directly into new pots with the original root ball intact. The roots of herbaceous flowers are relatively fine and dense. Because the soil ball of plug seedlings is too small, the roots are generally not disturbed. If they are nursery pot seedlings, things are a little different.
Nursery pot seedlingsFor slightly larger nursery pot seedlings, a little handling is generally needed before planting. I do not know if you have ever noticed that the roots of nursery pot seedlings tend to coil around the bottom of the nursery pot.
For roots like these, Lanyao suggests removing or loosening the coiled roots. Only loosen the coiled roots, not the soil ball. Loosening or removing these roots is more helpful for stimulating new roots and allows them to root faster. How to repot woody flowering plant varietiesThe above refers to herbaceous flowers. For woody flowering plants, the situation is somewhat different.
The growing medium of woody flowering plant seedlings is often mostly clay, which is very different from the soil we gardeners use for growing plants at home. In this case, Lanyao suggests determining the repotting method according to the nature of the seedling's original soil.
If the soil ball it comes with is not very different from the soil we mix ourselves, then it can be potted directly. If the soil it comes with is relatively sticky and heavy, while the soil we mix is relatively loose and light, Lanyao suggests washing the roots or at least removing 2/3 of the original soil ball to expose healthy roots before potting and planting.Note the following:
If the original soil ball it comes with is very compacted and no healthy roots can be seen on the outside, then you must wash the roots or remove part of the original soil ball, with exposing healthy roots as the standard.
Now that you understand the repotting methods for different seedlings, the next step is potting. However, before potting there is still a very important task, which is mixing the soil. Whether the potting soil is mixed well or not directly affects whether the potted plant can grow healthily. Due to limited space, tomorrow Lanyao will continue sharing methods for mixing potting soil.
