A detailed guide to carrot seed soaking techniques, a must-read before sowing
Because a layer of bristles clings to the surface of carrot seeds, sowing them by conventional methods results in slow and uneven emergence. After years of practice, soaking the seeds in hydrogen peroxide solution has proven more effective, and it has already been promoted and applied at the carrot production base in Xiangcheng County.
Soaking time
Put the prepared 25% hydrogen peroxide solution into a container, pour in carrot seeds whose bristles have been rubbed off, stir with a wooden stick while pouring, and soak for 30-50 minutes.
Seed germination
After soaking, scoop the seeds out of the hydrogen peroxide solution, then rinse them with clean water 3-4 times, draining the water while rinsing. After draining, put them in a container, cover with a damp cloth and keep them to germinate. If the seeds are moderately mature and plump, generally more than 85% of the seeds will germinate in 7-8 days, and full emergence will occur 5 days after sowing.
Precautions
First, before soaking the seeds, sun the seeds on a sunny day.
Second, sterilize the seeds that have already been soaked and germinated with a chlorothalonil solution.
Third, the seeds that have been soaked, germinated and sterilized should be sown promptly, and the soil is required to be moist.
Fourth, after sowing, cover with 0.5-1 cm of soil and press down lightly, then use a cover to shade the sun; when 10%-15% of the seedlings have emerged, remove the cover.
