Jasmine flowers are white and fragrant, adding vitality to the hot summer. Caring well for jasmine not only lets you enjoy its beauty, but also helps reduce internal heat. However, many flower lovers find their jasmine does not bloom or develops problems like yellow leaves. That is because potted jasmine has not been cared for according to the proper "ratios."

So, what "ratios" should be followed when growing potted jasmine so that it blooms more beautifully?

1. The pot ratio

When planting jasmine, the pot should be chosen based on the jasmine root system's requirements for good aeration and a relatively moist environment. For potted jasmine, unglazed clay pots are preferred; glazed pots and porcelain pots can only be used for short-term display planting. The unglazed clay pots suitable for planting jasmine generally come in 3 sizes: 25cm diameter, 15cm height; 30cm diameter, 17cm height; 36cm diameter, 22cm height. It is best if the pot diameter is slightly smaller than the canopy, which helps maintain soil moisture.

2. The soil ratio

For potted jasmine, the growing medium is made by mixing 4 parts loam, 4 parts compost, and 2 parts sand, plus a small amount of bone meal, cake fertilizer, plant ash, and other materials piled together. The growing medium should be fertile, loose, strong in water and fertilizer retention, and well aerated.

3. The fertilizer ratio

The principle for fertilizing potted jasmine is to apply lightly and frequently. For topdressing, use a general-purpose organic liquid fertilizer for flowers as the main type; it is generally recommended to dilute it 500 times and apply it once a week by watering the roots.

In addition, when jasmine sprouts new shoots, apply 0.5% ferrous sulfate once every other day, and every 3~4 days apply a general-purpose liquid fertilizer for flowers together with 3g of ferrous sulfate added to 500 milliliters of fertilizer water as a topdressing. During the flowering season, fertilizer should be applied once every 2~3 days, with a fertilizer-to-water ratio of 4:8 or 3:7.

4. The water ratio

When watering potted jasmine, still follow the principle of not watering until the soil is dry. When temperatures are lower in spring and autumn, water once every 2~3 days; in summer, water once every 1~2 days. During the "dog days" from June to August, with high temperatures and drought, water evaporation is high, so water once in the morning and once in the afternoon each day. Starting from November, strictly control water supply throughout the winter. During the flowering period, do not water too much; especially for jasmine grown for its flowers, water should be controlled even more, which can extend the flowering period.
