Sheep Diseases: Prevention Is Key and Body Condition Matters

In sheep farming, various sheep diseases commonly occur, which can generally be classified into infectious diseases, parasitic diseases, common diseases, and toxic diseases. Among these, infectious diseases and parasitic diseases have strong transmission power, high herd outbreak rates, and great harmfulness, seriously affecting the health of sheep flocks. Therefore, while developing sheep production, prevention work against sheep diseases must be done well first.

(1) Strengthen feeding management and maintain good hygiene: "A thin sheep is a sick sheep," "Disease starts from thin body condition, and a weak body invites all kinds of diseases" - these are well-known sayings. Strengthening feeding management can enhance the sheep's physique and improve production performance, and is also the foundation of disease prevention and elimination. Maintaining good hygiene can enhance the body's resistance, eliminate the transmission role of various pathogenic microorganisms in the external environment, and reduce the chances of infection - this is the key to disease prevention and elimination. Immunity can also be acquired through preventive vaccination, which is an important means of disease prevention and elimination. Only by closely combining these three aspects and promoting each other can the principle of prevention first be reflected. Keep pastures hygienic, eliminate rodent and animal pests, remove carcasses and animal bones, eradicate poisonous weeds, and avoid grazing in low-lying wet areas; keep sheep sheds and exercise yards clean and dry, clean regularly, disinfect periodically, and remove and compost manure and waste regularly; ensure sheep body hygiene by regularly giving sheep medicated baths every year to prevent the occurrence of external parasitic diseases.

(2) Strictly implement quarantine and disinfection systems: Quarantine is an indispensable and important part of carrying out the "prevention first" principle. Through quarantine, diseases can be discovered early, prevention and control measures can be taken promptly, and control and elimination can be achieved on the spot, preventing the spread of disease. Quarantine involves regular health checks on sheep flocks, sampling and testing, timely discovery of sick sheep, isolation treatment or disposal, and elimination of infection sources. Newly purchased sheep can only be introduced into the flock after quarantine and testing confirm they are disease-free, preventing disease introduction. Disinfection is the use of various methods to eliminate the harm of pathogenic microorganisms, parasites, and eggs to sheep, and is an important measure for preventing and eliminating diseases. Different disinfection methods can be selected according to different targets and requirements, such as physical disinfection and sterilization, chemical disinfection, and biological heat disinfection. Disinfection targets include sheds, manure, soil, carcasses, clothing, etc.

(3) Regularly carry out preventive vaccination and deworming medicated baths according to plan: Preventive vaccination and deworming medicated baths are the two most important tasks in annual sheep flock disease prevention work. Only by following scientific immunization procedures and carrying out immunization vaccination regularly and timely; and in deworming medicated baths, strictly abiding by operating procedures and accurately preparing medicinal solution concentrations, can sheep flock disease occurrence be effectively controlled. The effectiveness of disease prevention depends on the health status of the sheep, drug quality, operating techniques, and vaccination coverage. An important experience in veterinary prevention and control is: "A hundred treatments are not as good as one prevention (prevention), a hundred preventions are not as good as one grasp (grasping body condition)." This fully explains the relationship between sheep flock nutrition and disease prevention and control, as well as the importance of sheep disease prevention. Kang Minjuan
