A Detailed Explanation of Common Reasons Why Flowering Plants Fail to Bloom

Gardeners who love growing flowers must have encountered the situation where their plants fail to bloom. In fact, aside from the plant itself being too weak to have reached the conditions for flowering, the reasons that affect blooming also include: insufficient light, poor ventilation, unsuitable temperature, unsuitable soil pH, improper pruning, insufficient nutrients, too much nitrogen fertilizer, pests and diseases.
Flowers and plants have different growth habits, so the treatment methods are naturally different as well. Below are the treatment methods for several common flowering plants that fail to bloom. Find the one that matches your situation:
★Kalanchoe★
Bloom period: February to May
Move to a spot with plenty of light:Kalanchoe loves light. Insufficient or too weak light will affect blooming. You can rotate the pot so that light is received evenly.
Reduce water appropriately:Too much water during the bloom period easily causes leggy growth and flower drop.
Pay attention to fertilizing:Kalanchoe loves fertilizer. During the growing season, nitrogen fertilizer can be applied to promote stem and leaf growth. After blooming, apply one more liquid fertilizer mainly of nitrogen to help it recover vigor. At other times, aside from stopping fertilization in summer, only nitrogen-phosphorus-potassium compound fertilizer can be applied. When fertilizing, do not get fertilizer on the leaves.
★Gardenia★
Bloom period: March to July
Maintain sufficient light:Move the gardenia to a place with good light, but the light should not be too strong or too weak.
Apply more phosphorus and potassium fertilizer before the bloom period:Gardenia loves fertilizer. During the growing season, apply decomposed cake fertilizer as a top dressing, and apply phosphorus and potassium fertilizer before the bloom season. It is recommended to change the soil once every 1 to 2 years to maintain soil fertility.
Slightly acidic soil:Gardenia loves acidic soil. When watering normally, you can add ferrous sulfate to improve the soil quality, and you can also regularly apply 10% alum fertilizer water as a top dressing.
★Rose★
Bloom period: April to September
Maintain light:Roses love light. It is recommended to place them on a south-facing balcony or grow them outdoors.
Reduce nitrogen fertilizer before the bloom period:During the growing season, you can appropriately supplement some cake fertilizer, alum fertilizer water, etc. Before the bloom period, reduce nitrogen fertilizer and supplement phosphorus and potassium fertilizer.
Prune in time:Roses bloom on new branches of the current year, so they need continuous pruning. Cut off some old branches to encourage new shoots. For large potted rose plants, it is advisable to prune when repotting in early spring, cutting off all dead branches, diseased branches and crossing branches.
Generally, for vigorous branches of a mature plant, cut off about 1/2; for weaker growth, cut off 2/3, leaving 3-5 strong main branches. After the first flush of flowers fades in October, promptly cut off the spent flower stems to promote rapid sprouting of new shoots.
★Jasmine★
Bloom period: May to August
Keep the potting soil slightly acidic:Jasmine loves acidity. During the growing season, a 20% ferrous sulfate solution can be used to water once every half month.
Light must be sufficient:A place with sufficient light is beneficial for the sprouting of flower buds.
Water thoroughly:Neither too dry nor too wet is good, but in summer it needs to be watered once in the morning and once in the evening, thoroughly. If it rains continuously, do not let the potted plant get rained on.
Sufficient nutrients during the bloom period:In summer, when it enters the full bloom period, apply decomposed dilute liquid fertilizer once every 3 to 5 days; during the bud formation and bloom period, apply phosphorus-based organic fertilizer liquid once every 3 days, or spray potassium dihydrogen phosphate 1 to 2 times.
Prune in time:After the flowers fade, prune in time. Leggy branches should be cut short promptly, and after pruning, apply one heavy fertilization.
★Hydrangea★
Bloom period: June to August
Repot in early spring:It is recommended to repot in early spring. When changing the soil, add decomposed cake fertilizer as a base fertilizer, and supplement phosphorus and potassium fertilizer before the bloom period.
Prune appropriately:The best time for pruning is during the flower bud differentiation period (mid-July to early August). Only 2 to 3 nodes of the aboveground part need to be kept; the rest can all be cut off.
Pay attention to light:It is best placed in a place with good light but without direct sun exposure. Insufficient light easily affects flower bud differentiation, but light should not exceed 10 hours. When placed indoors, fluorescent lamp illumination at night affects blooming.
Temperature should be low during flower bud differentiation:During flower bud differentiation, a period of relatively low temperature is needed, 5 to 10°C, for about a month and a half.
★Bowl lotus★
Bloom period: June to September
The container must not be too small:Generally, a flower pot with a diameter of 25cm and a depth of 30cm is best.
Maintain light:It is recommended to move it to a place with good light.
Mud is best:To grow bowl lotus, mud must be used. In summer, one bean cake can be inserted for top dressing. If the potting soil and lotus leaves behave abnormally, pour out the pot water and continuously add fresh water to relieve it.
★Bougainvillea★
Bloom period: September to December
Maintain light:It loves strong light. Place it in a place with good light. In northern regions, it should be moved indoors for care when winter arrives.
Control watering before the bloom period:Control the amount of watering before the bloom period arrives, and water appropriately only when the leaves are slightly wilted.
Increase phosphorus and potassium fertilizer during the bloom period:During the growing season, nitrogen fertilizer should be applied once every 7-10 days. Stop applying nitrogen fertilizer during the bloom period and increase phosphorus and potassium fertilizer.
Improper pruning:Too many or too dense branches will also affect nutrient distribution and cannot promote flower bud formation. During care, according to the shape of the plant, irregularly thin out overly dense and excess branches.
★Camellia★
Bloom period: October to May
Pay attention to ventilation:Long-term placement indoors, poor ventilation, insufficient humidity, room temperature too high (above 20°C).
Do not apply nitrogen fertilizer before the bloom period:In January, nitrogen-phosphorus mixed fertilizer can be applied 1 to 2 times. Before blooming, do not apply nitrogen fertilizer, only phosphorus fertilizer.
Keep the potting soil moist:The potting soil should not be too wet or too dry; keeping it moist is enough.
★Cyclamen★
Bloom period: December to April
Temperature:The suitable growth temperature for cyclamen is 15 to 20°C. When the temperature is above 28°C, it enters dormancy or semi-dormancy. Above 35°C, the corm easily rots. Therefore, in summer, be sure to pay attention to shading, cooling and ventilation.
Moisture:Insufficient moisture. In September, cyclamen ends dormancy and resumes growth. At this time, it should be repotted in time, and after repotting, water thoroughly.
Pause fertilization during the bloom period:Apply a dilute liquid fertilizer containing phosphorus and potassium once every 10 days. Pause fertilization during the bloom period.
