You are probably all familiar with the precious medicinal herb Dendrobium, long known as the "resurrection grass" and "immortal grass," and among the people also called the "life-saving immortal medicine," which shows just how highly it is valued. Now that artificial propagation methods exist, Dendrobium is no longer an immortal medicine of which "only the name is heard, but the plant itself is never seen," and has instead become a new favorite of plant lovers, kept at home to admire, to eat, and to soothe the mind. I also grow a pot of Dendrobium bellatulum, purely to catch a glimpse of its flowers. After more than half a year of care, my Dendrobium bellatulum finally bloomed recently, and it truly has an immortal grace! How do you care for the precious medicinal herb Dendrobium in summer? Let me tell you about it.

Watering

Dendrobium likes a moist environment, so in summer you must be sure to water it, and the potting soil must stay moist for a long time and not get too dry. If the medium drains very easily, water once a day; if the medium does not drain very well, then you will certainly need to water every two or three days. Especially for gardening friends in the north who grow Dendrobium as a potted plant, if the weather is hot and dry, you can scatter a few grass seeds on the surface of the Dendrobium pot and let a layer of small grass grow, which is ideal for retaining moisture and cooling things down. It has been raining here every day recently, so it is not dry, but when the weather is hot I spread a little green grass on the surface of the pot, or place one or two leafy greens there.

Misting

When caring for Dendrobium in summer, misting is indispensable; you must mist. If the air humidity is not very low, mist once in the morning and once in the evening. If the air humidity is relatively low, mist twice in the morning and twice in the evening. When misting, be careful not to mist only the stems and leaves of the Dendrobium; the surface of the potting soil and the surrounding area should all be misted too, to retain moisture and cool things down, so that the Dendrobium has a good growing environment.

Fertilizing

When the temperature is above 30°C, it is not advisable to fertilize Dendrobium; just watering and misting are enough. When the temperature is below 30°C, you can give the Dendrobium a little diluted liquid fertilizer. Note that when fertilizing in summer you must avoid the roots of the Dendrobium and apply it from the edge of the pot; touching the roots can easily cause the roots to rot and die. It is best to fertilize in the evening, and ventilate after fertilizing.

Ventilation

If you want to grow Dendrobium well in summer, you must ventilate! If you have no ventilation conditions, create them; if you have ventilation conditions, make use of them! Ventilation is the prerequisite for Dendrobium to get through the summer. When the weather is hot and the potting soil is damp, if there is no ventilation the roots will rot and the plant will die. It is best to keep the Dendrobium outdoors, with ventilation 24 hours a day, and then getting through the summer is generally no problem.

Light

When growing Dendrobium in summer, you must not let it be exposed to strong sun; it will be scorched to death in minutes! It is best to keep the Dendrobium on an east-facing balcony, where it can get a little light in the morning (sun before 10 a.m., no sun after 10 a.m.), and stay in a cool, shaded place the rest of the time. If you do not have an east-facing balcony, put it at a north window or on a north-facing balcony. Do not worry that too little light will make the Dendrobium grow leggy; when summer temperatures are high, the Dendrobium is in a semi-dormant state, and even if you let it grow freely, it will not grow much. If you have a yard, you can put the Dendrobium in the shade of a tall tree, which solves both the light problem and the ventilation problem, killing two birds with one stone! Some gardening friends keep their Dendrobium in a spot with scattered light, and as they care for it, it shrivels or turns yellow; in fact, this is still caused by high temperatures.

For the precious medicinal herb Dendrobium orchid, the most important things in summer care are watering and misting. Misting is fine, but many gardening friends cannot get watering right, and the plant either turns yellow from drought or is watered to death. In fact, water when the potting soil is six parts dry; just keep it a little moister than other houseplants. When watering, you also need to consider your own medium, whether it drains very well or not, and then decide the watering frequency. In short, the principles for growing Dendrobium orchid in summer are: less fertilizer, less light, more wind, more water, more mist!
