If you want your pothos to have lush branches and leaves, you need to meet its growing conditions in every respect, and the four most important ones are watering, temperature, light and fertilizing. The summer of 2018 has already reached the high-temperature season, so I will mainly talk about how to care for pothos in summer so that it grows well.

1. Put the pothos in a cool, ventilated place

The temperature pothos likes is 20-30°C. Although in some places the temperature has already reached above 35°C, because summer has only just begun, the indoor temperature is not very high. If you put the pothos in a cool, ventilated place, it can still grow well for quite a while and will not enter a slow-growth period early just because the temperature is too high. I have tested it: a spot with diffused light next to a south-facing balcony is about two to three degrees warmer than a spot by the window of a north-facing room.

As long as there is bright light, pothos can grow. Don't worry that it will not grow well by a north-facing window or on a north-facing balcony; in summer this is basically not a problem. In summer many people put their pothos in a spot with diffused light by a south-facing window or on a south-facing balcony, but in fact when the temperature is high, even a spot with diffused light is very hot. This causes the pothos leaves to turn yellowish, become soft and grow slowly.

2. In summer it can go without light

In summer pothos can go without light and still grow well. If conditions allow, you can let the pothos get some sun before 9 a.m. and after 7 p.m., but not too much; half an hour to one hour each time is enough.

3. Fertilize reasonably according to the weather

For pothos to have lush branches and leaves, fertilizing is definitely involved. If you never fertilize for a long time and want it to grow several meters, it is basically impossible. Those flower lovers who say they never fertilize but their pothos grows so well either have potting soil that is already very rich in nutrients, or they have watered with nutrient water, such as rice-washing water or liquid fertilizer. Although when growing flowers and plants you should stop fertilizing when the temperature is too high, when growing pothos, unless the indoor temperature is very high, above 35°C, you can fertilize appropriately to let it grow.

Apply a nitrogen-based fertilizer once or twice a month. You can use a few granules of compound fertilizer mixed with water, or a water-soluble fertilizer, which is absorbed quickly. After fertilizing, you can clearly see the pothos grow.

4. Do not water too frequently

When the surface of the pothos soil is dry, water it thoroughly right away. Do not let the pothos lack water, but also do not water frequently, which causes water to accumulate in the potting soil. If ventilation is also poor, the roots will easily rot.

If you do these few things, throughout the whole summer your pothos will keep pushing out new shoots, grow especially fast, reach several meters long, climb onto the wall, and make the whole room green and lush. Doesn't that give you a super sense of achievement?
