Angelica dahurica planting techniques and precautions

Angelica dahurica, also known as fragrant angelica dahurica, can dispel wind and release the exterior, disperse cold and relieve pain, remove dampness and open the orifices, and reduce swelling and discharge pus. Modern pharmacological research has proven that, in addition to antipyretic, analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects, angelica dahurica can also improve local blood circulation, eliminate excessive accumulation of pigment in tissues, and promote skin cell metabolism, thereby achieving a cosmetic effect. The Compendium of Materia Medica says that angelica dahurica "promotes flesh growth, beautifies the complexion, and can be used as a facial cream." So what arethe angelica dahurica planting techniques and precautions?

Angelica dahurica is highly adaptable, cold-tolerant, and fond of a mild and humid climate. It is cultivated throughout China and prefers a sunny environment with ample light. Angelica dahurica is a deep-rooted, fertilizer-loving plant. It should be planted in deep, loose and fertile, moist but well-drained sandy loam soil. When planted in clay, overly sandy, or shallow and thin soil, the main root is small with many forks. It is also not suitable for cultivation in saline-alkali land, and continuous cropping is not advisable. After angelica dahurica bolts, the root becomes hollow and rots and cannot be used medicinally.

Angelica dahurica planting techniques

1. Seed cultivation

Angelica dahurica is propagated by seed. Individual plants can be selected for transplanting and seed retention, or seed can be retained in place. In production, the former method is mostly used, generally carried out when harvesting angelica dahurica.

2. Sowing

The sowing period for angelica dahurica is divided into spring and autumn. Spring sowing is around Qingming, but the yield is low and the quality is poor, so it is generally not adopted. Autumn sowing cannot be too early or too late. It should not be earlier than Chushu; otherwise, growth will be rapid in the winter of that year, and most plants will bolt and bloom the following year, and their roots cannot be used medicinally. But it should not be later than Qiufen at the latest; because after Qiufen rainfall gradually decreases and temperatures turn lower, angelica dahurica will not germinate for a long time after sowing, affecting growth and yield. Therefore, sowing should be done from early August to early September.

3. Sowing method: Angelica dahurica is suitable for direct sowing and not for seedling raising and transplanting. Transplanted plants have forked roots and poor root growth, affecting yield and quality. Use hole sowing and drill sowing. Before sowing, water the bed thoroughly, and after the water seeps down, begin sowing. Before sowing, the seeds should be mechanically treated to remove the seed wing membrane, then soaked in warm water (45°C) for 6 hours, removed, wiped dry, and sown. For hole sowing, open holes at a row spacing of about 33 cm and a plant spacing of 16-20 cm, with a hole depth of 6-10 cm. After sowing, water, sprinkle water, or cover with grass to keep the soil moist regularly. Seedlings emerge 0-20 days after sowing. Autumn-sown angelica dahurica has a large main root and high yield. For drill sowing, open furrows at a row spacing of 33 cm, spread the seeds evenly, and cover with a layer of fine soil. The seeding rate is 4 kg per mu. Other steps are the same as for hole sowing.

Precautions for planting angelica dahurica

1. Land selection and preparation: Angelica dahurica does not have strict requirements for land. A warm, sunny, relatively moist sandy loam with deep tillage layer, loose and fertile soil, and good drainage is best. General production areas are preferably in plains. Deeply plow the land, make the soil fine and crumbly, water, and apply base fertilizer.

2. Pest and disease control: Common pests and diseases of angelica dahurica include leaf spot disease, yellow swallowtail butterfly, aphids, red spiders, and so on. Control method: spray targeted drugs plus Xin Gao Zhi Mo, which greatly improves the utilization rate of the active ingredients of pesticides, is not afraid of evaporation under the sun, can regulate water absorption, and prevents drought and rain damage.
