How to cultivate jasmine? Keep these five key points in mind
Jasmine belongs to the Oleaceae family and the Jasminum genus. Its flowering period is from June to October. Its leaves are emerald green, its flowers are pure white and lustrous, and its fragrance is delicate and gentle. It is hailed as the foremost of all fragrant flowers and has excellent ornamental value as well as high economic value.
I. Pot type
The pots are mainly plastic pots, and the survival rate of jasmine reaches 90%. When clay pots are used, the survival rate is about 80%. Its growth vigor is not as strong as that of plants in plastic pots, the leaves are smaller, and it is not tolerant of drought, so it basically needs watering every day. Analyzing the reasons, because clay pots are gray-black, they easily absorb heat under direct sunlight. At noon on sunny days, the pot body of a clay pot is about 5°C higher than that of a plastic pot, and the soil temperature in the pot is also 3~4°C higher. Therefore, when planting in the open air, white plastic pots that do not absorb heat are preferable.
II. Shade covering
During the sprouting period of jasmine (the end of May), a shade net should be used for covering. Direct sunlight easily causes drought, and branches easily lose water, which has a relatively large impact on the sprouting of new buds. Therefore, in the initial stage of planting, covering with a shade net and maintaining humidity are beneficial to the rapid sprouting of buds. During the growth period of jasmine (the end of June), do not cover with a shade net. Jasmine is a light-loving plant, so during its growth period, strengthening light is beneficial to its growth and development.
III. Pruning
Jasmine can produce many batches of flowers in large quantities. It is mainly done by pinching the tips to promote side branches, so that 1 branch tip can be divided into 2 branch tips, and 2 branch tips can be divided into 4 branch tips, resulting in flowering on many branches. Pinch the tips around June 25, remove the tender branches, and keep only 2~3 layers of leaves at the base, 5~6 cm, then carry out normal fertilizer and water management, and it will bloom in 25~30 days. Jasmine is a light-loving plant. Under the same management method, higher temperatures and stronger sunlight are beneficial for jasmine's vegetative growth and reproductive growth.
IV. Fertilization
From tip pinching to side bud development and flowering, jasmine needs 30~40 days under natural conditions, while reasonable fertilization can advance flowering by 5~10 days, and the leaves are darker and the flowers are larger. Apply topdressing twice: on August 5, apply Huaduoduo growth fertilizer (nitrogen-phosphorus-potassium: 30-10-10, 1000 times solution) once, and on August 15, apply Huaduoduo flowering fertilizer (nitrogen-phosphorus-potassium: 10-20-30, 800 times solution) once. After topdressing, jasmine has better growth vigor, and the leaves are large, thick, and dark green.
V. Temperature management
Jasmine is relatively sensitive to temperature. It likes warm, hot, and humid climates and can tolerate relatively high temperatures, but it fears low temperatures and has poor drought resistance. Potted jasmine in the jasmine garden should all be moved into a multi-span greenhouse in early November. A small arched shed should be set up inside the greenhouse, covered with straw curtains, and normal ventilation to dissipate moisture should be carried out during the day. Generally, no heating is needed at night, but during periods when the outdoor low temperature reaches -5°C or above, water should be boiled inside the greenhouse for steam heating, so that the temperature inside the greenhouse is not lower than 0°C.
