Plantain Seed Cultivation Techniques

Plantain seedis a commonly used traditional Chinese medicinal material, derived from the dried mature seeds of the Plantaginaceae plants Plantago asiatica and Plantago depressa. It is sweet in taste and cold in nature, and has the effects of promoting diuresis to treat strangury, clearing heat to improve eyesight, and eliminating phlegm to relieve cough.

Plantain is a perennial herbaceous plant that prefers a warm, sunny, and moist environment. It is afraid of waterlogging and drought, and is suitable for cultivation in fertile sandy loam soil.

I. Cultivation Methods

1. Seedbed raising: Select fertile soil, plow deeply, apply sufficient base fertilizer, and make beds. The sowing time is around Cold Dew. When sowing, scatter the seeds evenly on the bed surface, with a sowing rate of 0.5 kg per mu. After sowing, cover with a layer of rice straw. After sowing, water once every 3-5 days to keep the soil moist and promote germination. After seedlings emerge, remove the rice straw. When the seedlings are 7-10 cm tall, they can be transplanted.

2. Transplanting: Before planting, apply sufficient base fertilizer and pay attention to digging good drainage ditches. Transplant between Minor Snow and Major Snow, with a row spacing of 25 cm and plant spacing of 25 cm, 1 plant per hole. Transplant as they are pulled up, and water after planting to stabilize the roots.

3. Management after transplanting: Starting 5 days after the seedlings revive, carry out 3 rounds of intertillage, weeding, and topdressing. The first is from Minor Cold to Major Cold, the second from Start of Spring to Rain Water, and the third from Awakening of Insects to Spring Equinox. Each topdressing should be done on a sunny day, first intertilling and weeding, then fertilizing. Fertilizer can be human and livestock manure or urea. At the third fertilization, add potassium fertilizer, 30 kg per mu. During intertillage, combine with hilling to prevent the plants from lodging.

II. Harvesting and Processing: Around the Dragon Boat Festival, when the seeds turn dark brown, they can be harvested. Plantain seeds mature in stages, so they should be harvested as they mature. On a sunny day, cut the fruiting spikes back with a sickle and pile them indoors for 1-2 days, then place them on bamboo mats and expose them to the sun. After drying, rub them with your hands, remove debris, sieve out the seeds with a sieve, and then use a winnowing fan to remove the husks. The general yield is 120-150 kg per mu.
