How to grow peonies? Remember these three key points

Peony (Paeonia lactiflora) is a perennial herbaceous plant native to northern China. Wild species are currently distributed in areas such as the Qinling Mountains and the Dabie Mountains. There are now over a thousand varieties worldwide, with about 180 species in China. Peonies are highly adaptable and cold-tolerant, and can overwinter outdoors in northern China, but daily cultivation and management require attention to three key areas.
Peony flowers: Can peony flowers be grown indoors?
First, pay attention to the soil - good drainage is essential
Peonies prefer a cool climate and are suitable for cultivation in temperate to subtropical regions of China. They sprout in spring and develop roots in autumn. During the hot summer months, the plants enter a semi-dormant state. They prefer fertile, loose, well-drained sandy loam soil and dislike saline-alkaline soil. Since peonies have fleshy roots, they are drought-tolerant but susceptible to waterlogging. If the soil becomes compacted and waterlogged, the fleshy roots can easily rot, so low-lying areas and saline-alkaline soil are not suitable for cultivation. Therefore, when planting in the ground, choose a cool location with plenty of sunlight. For potted plants, avoid overwatering. Throughout the dormant period from winter to early spring, the soil should remain moist, not too dry, but drainage must be unobstructed and waterlogging avoided, otherwise the underground tubers can easily rot and die.
Second, pay attention to division propagation
Peonies are generally propagated by division. As the saying goes, "Divide peonies at the spring equinox, and they will never bloom." Therefore, peonies are usually divided in October after the above-ground parts have withered. Spring transplanting is not recommended. When dividing, dig out the root clump and cut it apart along the natural cracks in the roots with a sharp knife, ensuring each division has 3-5 plump, well-developed buds and the root mass below them. Be careful not to damage the bud eyes. Then plant them in sandy soil that has been enriched with base fertilizer, covering with 3-4 cm of soil, keeping the soil moist but not waterlogged. Generally, divided plants can bloom the following year. Potted peonies can be repotted every one to two years in conjunction with division, and as much of the original soil as possible should be retained when repotting. If the clump is not large, do not divide it.
Third, pay attention to flowering period management
During the growing period, especially during bud formation and flowering, the plants must not lack water. At the same time, thin out buds promptly - lateral buds should be removed once they appear, so that nutrients are concentrated and the terminal bud produces larger flowers. After the flowers fade, promptly cut off the flower stems to prevent seed formation and nutrient consumption. Half a month after the flowers fade, that is, in late June, fertilization should be applied to promptly replenish the nutrients consumed during the flowering period and lay a good foundation for the peony to enter its second vigorous growth period.
