Cultivation and Pest and Disease Control Techniques for Podocarpus macrophyllus

Podocarpus macrophyllus is also known as Luohanbin and Tubin. It belongs to the genus Podocarpus in the family Podocarpaceae, and is suitable for use in gardens as a specimen plant, in paired plantings, group plantings, row plantings, or as potted bonsai. It is native to China's Yangtze River basin, and is widely cultivated in various regions.

Evergreen tree with a broad ovate crown. Leaves are linear-lanceolate, dark green on the surface, grayish-green on the underside, sometimes with a white powdery coating, spirally arranged, 1-13 cm long and 0.5-1 cm wide, densely packed. The flowering period is from April to May. Seeds are ovate, with a black aril, borne on the seed stalk and forming a gourd-shaped two-section structure. The seed stalk is sweet and edible. The branches mostly grow upright. It prefers warm, humid conditions and fertile soil, grows well under semi-shaded conditions, and is generally overwintered indoors as a potted plant.

Cultivation Techniques

1. Propagation Methods. Propagation can be done by sowing or cuttings.

(1) Sowing. Sow in holes in April or October.

(2) Cuttings. Softwood cuttings have a relatively high survival rate and can be done in spring and autumn.

2. Cultivation Management

Seedlings grow slowly. Pay attention to water and fertilizer supply. Keeping the soil constantly moist can promote growth. During the growing period, pay attention to pruning side branches to ensure the growth of the central trunk. At the same time, pay attention to the overall tree shape when pruning. When transplanting seedlings, they need to be transplanted with a soil ball. When grown in pots in the north, they should not be exposed to strong sunlight in summer, and water accumulation in the pot should be prevented. When the temperature is below 5°C, they should be moved indoors, and watering should be controlled.

3. Pests and Diseases

In summer, during high temperatures and dry conditions, red spiders and scale insects are prone to occur. They can be killed by spraying with petroleum emulsion, or by using a small amount of a highly effective insecticide
