Planting Techniques for Chinese Lantern

Chinese lantern is a perennial plant with low soil requirements; it can grow in ordinary soil and thrives on hillsides, in mountain gullies and on wasteland, with very strong drought and cold resistance.

Propagate by seed; sowing can be done in spring or before the ground freezes. Before sowing, soak the seeds in warm water for 10 hours, remove them and mix well with moist sand, keeping them moist and stirring once a day; after a few days, sow once some seeds have sprouted. Draw furrows 1-1.5 cm deep at a row spacing of 25-30 cm, scatter the seeds in, cover with 1 cm of soil and then water; with suitable temperature, seedlings emerge in 7-15 days. When Chinese lantern plants are 10 cm tall, thin them to a plant spacing of 15 cm, combined with cultivating and weeding; in June apply 15-20 kg of urea per mu, and pay attention to drainage during the rainy season.

Harvesting and processing: in autumn, once the fruit turns red it can be harvested; remove the flesh inside the skin and dry in the sun, or dry the whole fruit in the sun for medicinal use, whichever you prefer.
