How to Grow Aconite for High Yield? Detailed Explanation of Key Cultivation Techniques
Aconite, also known as Chuan Fuzi, Chuan Wutou, Tianxiong, etc. Its underground rhizome is used medicinally; the main root is called Wutou or Chuanwu; the lateral tuberous roots after processing are called Fuzi; the tuberous roots dried directly are called Caowu. Aconite has the effects of warming the interior, restoring yang, relieving pain, and dispelling wind. It mainly treats yang depletion with collapse, cold limbs, and a faint, barely perceptible pulse. It is also used to treat cold pain in the heart and abdomen, diarrhea due to deficiency-cold, yang-deficiency edema, and heart failure. Chuanwu can dispel wind-dampness, disperse cold, and relieve pain. It mainly treats wind-cold-dampness bi syndrome, cold pain in the limbs and joints, sciatica, cold pain in the abdomen, and severe traumatic pain. It is mainly produced in Sichuan, Shaanxi, Yunnan, Gansu, Hubei and other provinces.
Its morphological characteristics are those of a perennial herb in the Ranunculaceae family, with a plant height of 60-120 cm. The tuberous roots are usually two connected together; in cultivated plants the lateral roots (daughter roots) are usually enlarged, obovate-round to obovate, with a diameter of up to 5 cm. The epidermis is tea-brown to dark brown, smooth, surrounded by nodular protrusions, with many or few small fibrous roots below. The stem is erect, cylindrical, green on the surface, and the lower old stems are often purplish. The lower part is smooth and hairless, while the upper part is sparsely covered with a few appressed soft hairs. The leaves are alternate, stalked; the leaf blade is ovate-pentagonal, firm papery or slightly leathery, palmately 3-lobed, divided to the base, with the lateral lobes further 2-lobed, dark green on the surface and grayish green on the back. The inflorescence is a raceme-like panicle, with the inflorescence axis densely covered with recurved white soft hairs; the bracteoles are narrowly linear; there are 5 sepals, petal-like; the flowers are blue-purple, externally covered with short hairs; the stamens are numerous; the carpels are 3-5, free, densely covered with grayish-yellow short soft hairs. The fruit is oblong, about 2 cm long, with transverse veins, hairless. The style persists on the outer side of the fruit apex, appearing awn-like, and splits inward after maturity.
I. Growth Habits. Aconite prefers a warm and humid environment and is fond of water and fertilizer. It is better cultivated in deep, fertile soil rich in organic matter. Heavy clay and saline-alkali land are not suitable for planting.
II. Land Preparation and Fertilization. Choose a field with high terrain and good drainage, and cultivate it carefully. In combination with land preparation, apply sufficient base fertilizer: 3000 kg of farmyard manure, 20 kg of urea, and 50 kg of phosphorus-potassium-calcium per mu. Then make beds and wait for sowing.
III. Sowing. Aconite is propagated by rhizomes. The sowing period is mainly autumn sowing, but spring sowing is also possible. Autumn sowing is around Frost's Descent; spring sowing is around Qingming. Before sowing, select healthy, pest-free lateral tuberous roots as seed stock. Then, at a row spacing of 20×15 cm, plant the aconite seed stock on the prepared bed surface, water to preserve soil moisture, and promote survival. The sowing rate is 50 kg per mu.
IV. Field Management. After the aconite seedlings emerge completely, pay attention to intertillage and weeding. For large-scale planting, before seedling emergence, a herbicide for medicinal fields should be used for soil treatment, which can effectively control various weeds. Water promptly in dry weather, and pay attention to drainage in rainy weather. Do not water at noon during the dog days. Around the Beginning of Autumn, topdress once: apply 10 kg of urea and 10 kg of monopotassium phosphate per mu.
V. Pest and Disease Control. For downy mildew and leaf blight, use a 1:1:100 Bordeaux mixture for prevention before onset, or spray with a 400-fold solution of 40% carbendazim suspension concentrate in the early stage of the disease. Spray once a week, three times in succession. For powdery mildew, use Feningxiu for control in the early stage of the disease. For heart-boring worms, use phoxim for control.
VI. Harvesting and Processing. Autumn-planted aconite is dug on a sunny day around the Greater Heat of the following year. Cut off the fibrous roots from the dug underground rhizome of aconite to obtain fresh aconite. Cut off the mother root to obtain Chuanwu. After harvesting, fresh aconite should be processed within 24 hours. A common method is to soak 50 kg of fresh aconite in 25 kg of bile water (magnesium chloride water) for 7 days, remove it and put it in a pot to boil for half an hour; after it is thoroughly cooked, remove it and soak it in clean water overnight, scrape off the brown outer skin, and soak it in clean water for another night. Take it out, cut it lengthwise with a blade into slices 5 cm thick, then place it in a steamer and steam for 9 hours until the slices are glossy and shiny. Dry in the sun for half a day, fumigate with sulfur, and it becomes white aconite slices. It can also be processed into black aconite, salted aconite slices, etc., according to different needs. The yield is 250 kg per mu.
