Pneumonia is acute and worrisome, and some or quite a few people may have gone into shock during pneumonia, which may mean they had a severe pneumonia with shock caused by infection with highly virulent gram-positive or gram-negative bacteria, generally called shock-type pneumonia or toxic pneumonia. This kind of pneumonia progresses rapidly and is severe enough that shock often occurs. It may also be complicated by other equally serious diseases, so if treatment or rescue is not timely, it can lead to death.

Shock-type pneumonia

Shock-type pneumonia caused by infection with highly virulent gram-positive or gram-negative bacteria occurs mostly in young and middle-aged adults. In terms of clinical manifestations, it is mainly characterized by respiratory infection symptoms, systemic symptoms and shock, such as cough, sputum production, general discomfort, low blood pressure, sudden shock and frequent shock. Therefore, for pneumonia patients in this age group, once shock occurs, family members should take it seriously and send them to the hospital for treatment immediately.

During examination, if bacterial identification is not carried out, the lung signs of shock-type pneumonia show no particular specificity. There may be peripheral circulatory failure such as pale complexion, cold limbs, cyanosis of the lips or fingertips, thready and rapid pulse, cold sweat, and decreased blood pressure, as well as changes in consciousness such as confusion or apathy, and anuria. It is impossible for all specific symptoms to be present, and they differ from person to person. On X-ray imaging, shock-type pneumonia will show infiltrative shadows.

Gram-negative bacteria in shock-type pneumonia

During the process of being sent to the hospital and during examinations, patients with shock-type pneumonia should not be excessively moved or disturbed. Pathogen examinations such as sputum smear and culture should also be done promptly to clarify the causative bacteria and adopt corresponding treatment in time. In patients with shock-type pneumonia, blood white blood cells and neutrophils are mostly increased, and there may be a left shift. When analyzing blood gases for PaO2 and pH, standard bicarbonate (SB) and actual bicarbonate (AB) may decrease, and serum lactate may increase, showing metabolic acidosis; in severe cases, there may be damage to routine urine findings and liver and kidney function.
