High-Yield Cultivation Techniques of Radix Adenophorae

Radix Adenophorae, also known as whorled-leaf ladybell, Changbai ladybell, Mingye vegetable willow-root, grass ginseng, etc. Its underground rhizome is used as medicine, with effects such as nourishing yin and clearing lung heat, resolving phlegm and relieving cough. It is mainly used to treat pneumonia, bronchitis, cough with profuse phlegm and other conditions. It is mainly produced in Anhui, Guizhou, Sichuan, Hunan, Hubei, Jiangsu, Zhejiang and other provinces.

Morphological characteristics: It is a perennial herb of the Campanulaceae family, with white milky sap. The root is conical, yellowish-brown, with transverse striations. The stem is 60-90 cm tall, hairless or nearly hairless. The cauline leaves are 2-6 in whorls, sessile or with inconspicuous petioles; the leaf blade is ovate or elliptic-ovate, with serrate margins and sparse short pubescence on both surfaces. The inflorescence is paniculate, 35 cm long, hairless; the branches are whorled; the flowers are pendulous; the calyx is hairless with 5 lobes; the corolla is blue, slightly constricted at the mouth into a urn shape, hairless, with 5 shallow lobes; there are 5 stamens, often slightly exserted, the lower part of the filaments widened, with dense pubescence along the margins; the disk is cylindrical. The ovary is inferior; the style is exserted. The capsule is obovoid-globose, about 5 mm long.

I. Growth Habits: Radix Adenophorae prefers a warm and humid environment, is drought-tolerant, and avoids continuous cropping. It has low soil requirements and can be cultivated in general soils. However, deep, loose and fertile sandy loam is preferable. Low-lying land and saline-alkali land are not suitable for cultivation.

II. Land Preparation and Fertilization: Choose a field with high terrain and good drainage and carry out fine cultivation. In combination with land preparation, apply sufficient base fertilizer: 3000 kg of farmyard manure, 20 kg of urea, and 50 kg of phosphorus-potassium fertilizer per mu. Then make beds and wait for sowing.

III. Sowing: Radix Adenophorae is propagated by seeds. Sowing periods include autumn sowing and spring sowing. Autumn sowing is before the ground freezes, and spring sowing is around Qingming. Autumn sowing is preferable. Before sowing, first open shallow furrows on the prepared bed surface with a drill, then evenly scatter the seeds into the furrows, cover with soil, water to preserve moisture, and promote emergence. The sowing rate is 1 kg per mu.

IV. Field Management: After Radix Adenophorae emerges, attention should be paid to intertillage and weeding. For large-scale planting, soil treatment with a medicinal-field herbicide before emergence can effectively control various weeds. Pay attention to watering in dry weather and drain promptly in rainy weather. When the seedlings are 5 cm tall, thin them once, removing overly dense and weak seedlings. Around the Beginning of Autumn, apply a topdressing once: 10 kg of urea and 10 kg of potassium dihydrogen phosphate per mu.

V. Pest and Disease Control: The main pest and disease of Radix Adenophorae is root rot. In addition to paying attention to drainage in rainy weather, promptly remove diseased plants when found and disinfect the holes by scattering lime powder. Bordeaux mixture at 1:1:100 can also be sprayed for control before onset. Or use 65% mancozeb for control in the early stage of the disease. For aphids, use Mieyajing for control. For underground pests, use phoxim mixed with poisoned bait for trapping and killing.

VI. Harvest and Processing: Radix Adenophorae is generally harvested in autumn after 2—3 years of growth, after the aboveground stems and leaves wither. Before harvesting, first cut off the aboveground stems and leaves, then dig out the underground rhizome, remove all soil, peel off the outer skin, and sun-dry or oven-dry before it can be sold as medicine. The yield per mu is 250 kg.
