High-Yield Cultivation Techniques for Nepeta cataria

Nepeta cataria, also known as xianjie, four-angled stem artemisia, fragrant schizonepeta, etc. The whole plant is used medicinally, with effects of relieving exterior symptoms, dispelling wind, promoting eruption, and stopping bleeding. It mainly treats colds, headaches, sore throat, incomplete measles eruption, urticaria, skin itching, and other conditions. When charred, it treats bloody stool and abnormal uterine bleeding. It is mainly produced in Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Jiangxi, Anhui, Hebei, Hunan, Hubei, and other provinces.

Morphological Characteristics: It is an annual herb of the Lamiaceae family, with a plant height of 60-100 cm and a very strong aroma. The stem is erect, square, slightly purple at the base, branched in the upper part, and the whole plant is covered with short soft hairs. Leaves are opposite; the leaf blades are pinnately parted deeply, with 3-5 lobes, both surfaces covered with soft hairs, the underside bearing sunken glandular dots, and the veins inconspicuous. The flowers are verticillate cymes, mostly densely clustered at the branch tips, forming spikes; the flowers are small and light purple; the calyx is bell-shaped, with 5 teeth at the apex; the corolla is 2-lipped, with the upper lip 2-lobed and the lower lip 3-lobed; there are 4 stamens, 2 strong; the ovary is 4-lobed. There are 4 nutlets, ovate or elliptical, about 1 mm long, smooth on the surface, and brown. The flowering period is June to September, and the fruiting period is August to October.

I. Growth Habits: Nepeta cataria prefers a warm, humid environment with ample sunlight. It has low requirements for soil, but loam or sandy loam with deep soil layers, loose and fertile texture, and rich organic matter is best. Low-lying land, saline-alkali land, and heavy clay soil are not suitable for planting.

II. Land Preparation and Fertilization: Choose a field with high terrain and good drainage, and carry out fine cultivation. In combination with land preparation, apply sufficient base fertilizer: 3000 kg of farmyard manure, 20 kg of urea, and 50 kg of phosphate and potassium fertilizer per mu. Then make beds and wait for sowing.

III. Sowing: Nepeta cataria is propagated by seeds. Direct sowing is mostly used in production. Seedling raising and transplanting can also be used. Sowing periods include spring sowing and summer sowing. Spring sowing is around Qingming; summer sowing is around Mangzhong, mainly after rapeseed flowers and wheat stubble. Direct sowing: Before sowing, first use a drill to open shallow furrows on the prepared bed surface, then evenly scatter the seeds into the furrows, cover with soil, water to preserve moisture, and facilitate emergence. The sowing rate is 1 kg per mu. Seedling raising: Around Qingming, evenly sow the seeds on the prepared bed surface, loosen the surface soil so that the soil covers the seeds, water to preserve moisture, and facilitate emergence. After the seedlings emerge completely, strengthen field management. When the seedlings are 15 cm tall, they can be transplanted. Transplanting: In May to June, choose rainy weather, dig out the Nepeta cataria seedlings, and plant them on the prepared bed surface at a row spacing and plant spacing of 20×10 cm, with 2-3 seedlings per hole. Water to preserve moisture and facilitate survival.

IV. Field Management: After the Nepeta cataria seedlings emerge completely or after transplanting survives, attention should be paid to intertillage and weeding, frequent watering in dry weather, and timely drainage in rainy weather. Before and after canopy closure, topdress once: apply 10 kg of urea and 5 kg of potassium dihydrogen phosphate per mu.

V. Pest and Disease Control: The main diseases of Nepeta cataria include damping-off disease, black spot disease, and stem wilt disease. Comprehensive control measures can be adopted: 1. Practice crop rotation, rotating once every 3-5 years. 2. Before disease onset, use 1:1:100 Bordeaux mixture for prevention. 3. In the early stage of disease onset, use carbendazim for control. The main pest is the silver-marked noctuid moth, which can be killed with fenvalerate pesticide. For underground pests, use poisoned bait to trap and kill them.

VI. Harvesting and Processing: Nepeta cataria is generally harvested after most of the flower spikes have set seed. Cut the Nepeta cataria plants down at the root and dry them in the sun before selling them for medicinal use. The yield is 300 kg per mu. Those pulled up with roots are called whole Nepeta cataria. Those with the upper flower spikes cut off are called Nepeta cataria spikes. Those that are dry, green in color, with long spikes and strong aroma are considered best quality.
