Cultivation Techniques for Glehnia Root

Glehnia Rootis a perennial herb with white milky sap. The root is thick and sturdy, conical, yellowish-brown, and wrinkled. The stem is 50--100 cm tall, unbranched, hairless or with short fine hairs above the middle. The basal leaves are kidney-shaped or heart-shaped, with long petioles; the stem leaves are alternate, narrowly ovate or oblong-narrowly ovate, 3--9 cm long and 1.5--4 cm wide, with pointed tips, wedge-shaped bases, and irregularly serrate margins, initially hairy on the upper surface and later becoming hairless, with sparse short fine hairs along the veins on the lower surface, sessile or nearly sessile. The inflorescence is narrow and elongated, unbranched or with very short branches at the base; the calyx is bell-shaped, with 5 lobes at the tip, the lobes lanceolate and hairy; the corolla is purple-blue, broadly bell-shaped, about 1.8 cm long, with 5 shallow lobes, the lobes triangular and hairy on the outside; there are 5 stamens, with the filament bases enlarged and densely covered with soft hairs; the ovary is inferior, 3-locular, the style slender, hairy, slightly extending beyond the corolla, the stigma swollen and 3-lobed. The capsule is spherical. Flowering and fruiting period is summer and autumn. It is distributed in Sichuan Province, Guizhou Province, Guangxi Province, Hunan Province, Hubei Province, Jiangxi Province, Zhejiang Province, Jiangsu Province, Anhui Province, Shandong Province, Henan Province, and Shaanxi Province. It grows in hillside grass clumps, forest margins, or roadsides.

Adenophora tetraphylla has hairless stems, rarely hairy. The leaf margins are serrate, with sparse short fine hairs on both surfaces. The calyx is hairless, the lobes awl-shaped, 1--3 mm long, entire. It is distributed in Northeast China and the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, Hebei Province, Shanxi Province, Henan Province, Shandong Province, Guangdong Province, Guangxi Province, Yunnan Province, Sichuan Province, and Guizhou Province. It grows in grasslands, shrub thickets, or roadsides.

Medicinal material origins: Glehnia Root is mainly produced in Anhui Province, Jiangsu Province, and Zhejiang Province; Adenophora tetraphylla is mainly produced in Guizhou Province, Henan Province, Heilongjiang Province, the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, and Jiangsu Province. Guizhou Province has the largest output, while Anhui Province, Jiangsu Province, and Zhejiang Province have the best quality. It is sold nationwide.

Cultivation: It prefers a warm or cool climate; although it is tolerant of drought, it still needs an appropriate amount of water during the growing period, and during the seedling stage, drought often causes seedling death. Glehnia Root sown in the same year generally does not flower or set seed; it needs until June of the following year to bloom, with the flowering period from June to September, and the seeds mature in September. Cultivation is best in deep, fertile, humus-rich, well-drained sandy loam soil. It is propagated by seed, with spring sowing and winter sowing; in the north, spring sowing is in April, and winter sowing is before the ground freezes in November. Prepare the land and apply sufficient base fertilizer, applying 45000--60000 kg of compost or barnyard manure per lhm2. After preparing the land, make beds 1 m wide, open shallow furrows at a row spacing of 40 cm, evenly scatter the seeds into the furrows, cover with soil 1--1.5 cm, press lightly, water, and keep the soil moist regularly; spring-sown seeds emerge after about 2 weeks. Winter-sown seeds emerge in the spring of the second year. After the seedlings emerge, pay attention to weeding and loosening the soil; thin the seedlings once when they are about 3 cm tall, and finalize the spacing when they are 10--15 cm tall, leaving 1 strong seedling every 10--15 cm. To prevent lodging, during the growing period, you can combine fertilization with earthing up around the roots. For topdressing, apply light fertilizer frequently during the seedling stage to keep the seedlings vigorous; afterward, in addition to topdressing once each year after the plants wither and before emergence, also topdress once each in May, July, and September, mainly with human and livestock manure. When the plants are 45 cm tall, promptly pinch off the growing tips to control plant height, reduce nutrient consumption, and promote root growth. For diseases, there is root rot, which can be sprayed with a 500-fold solution of 50% Tuzet wettable powder. Brown spot disease can be sprayed with a 500-fold solution of 65% zineb wettable powder. For insect pests, there are aphids, cutworms, and others causing damage.
