High-Yield Cultivation of Coptis chinensis

Coptis chinensis grows in zones at an altitude of 900-1500m, prefers shade over sun, and needs abundant water and nutrients. It can be harvested 4-5 years after planting.

1. Select strong seedlings for planting. Coptis chinensis seedlings can be grown yourself or purchased. Generally, disease-free tender seedlings and strong seedlings 1-1.5 years old are best for transplanting, giving the highest yield. Seedlings over two years old are old and weak seedlings, and the yield after planting is relatively low, so they should not be selected. For Coptis chinensis production, virgin wasteland is the best choice, because virgin wasteland has fewer weeds and fewer pests and diseases. Land selection and preparation are basically the same as for the seedling bed, and trees can be appropriately left to provide shade.

2. Plant the seedlings carefully. Coptis chinensis seedlings can be planted in all four seasons, but spring and autumn are the best seasons. The planting method is one plant per hole, with a hole spacing and row spacing of about 15cm, planted in a square arrangement. When planting, press the fibrous roots firmly with fine soil, keep the seedling core level with the soil surface, and do not plant too deep.

3. Weed and add soil. The cultivation management of Coptis chinensis is the main guarantee for achieving high yield. Weed to protect the seedlings, weeding three times in total each year in spring, summer, and autumn, while in winter the main task is covering with soil. Each year Coptis chinensis tillers and grows a new batch of new buds that emerge from the soil surface. Covering with soil can promote vigorous growth of its rhizome. The method is to dig fertile soil from the box furrows and field edges and evenly scatter it over the Coptis chinensis beds. Before covering with soil, first apply a base fertilizer once, using 50kg of plant ash and 50kg of compound fertilizer per mu, and then cover with soil.

4. Topdressing and disease prevention. Spring and autumn are the periods of vigorous growth for Coptis chinensis and also the periods of greatest nutrient demand. Apply urea once each in autumn and spring, using 5kg per mu each time. Coptis chinensis plots two years after planting should be given additional human and livestock manure to promote root growth.
