Breeding Methods and Technical Key Points for Superior Angelica sinensis Varieties
For seed selection, choose fresh seeds set in the 2nd year after transplanting, with a plumpness of 70%-80%, clean, free of borers, and free of wounds, to use as seed.
Choose a leeward, shaded hillside or wasteland for the seedling nursery. Plow the land in late May, apply the ash from burned weeds and shrubs as base fertilizer, turn it into the soil, then rake it level and make raised beds 1.2 m wide. Sow from early to late June. Before sowing, soak the seeds in 30°C warm water for 24 hours, take them out and dry them in the sun, then broadcast them, cover the seeds firmly, and then cover with weeds. The sowing rate is 4~5 kg per mu. Seedlings emerge about half a month after sowing; at this time, loosen the covering grass to prevent injuring the seedlings when removing the grass. Remove the covering grass in early August. Weed whenever weeds appear, keep the field free of weeds, and thin the seedlings while weeding, removing the weak and keeping the strong, with a plant spacing of about 1 cm as appropriate.
When the plants in the seedling nursery grow to a height of 30-50 cm, select the plants to be retained for seed. The selection criteria are pure seedling seed, dark green leaf color, no wrinkled leaves, no spots, robust plant growth, and no damage from pests or diseases.
