Seed selection methods and key points for Fritillaria thunbergii cultivation
For Fritillaria thunbergii, select small bulbs as seed bulbs that have tightly clasped scales, plump and undamaged buds, no pests or diseases, and uniform size.
In the production areas, through long-term cultivation practice and selection and breeding, the following main local varieties have been developed:
Fine-leaf type: stem height 73 cm, lower stem diameter 0.6 cm. Leaves opposite or alternate, blades narrow and long, tips rather noticeably curled, dark green, leaf surface waxy. Each plant often has more than 2 bulbs, with 2 scales.
Whorled-leaf type: stem height 75 cm, lower diameter 0.68 cm. Leaves whorled, blades broad and long, tips slightly curled, leaves green. The number of secondary stems is small, with 2 bulbs per plant and 3 scales.
Large-leaf type: stem height 68 cm. Stout, lower diameter 0.76 cm. Leaves lush; upper stem leaves opposite or alternate, middle and lower leaves whorled, blades broad and upright, tip curling not obvious, light green, not waxy. The number of secondary stems is small, with more than 2 bulbs per plant and 2 scales.
Xiaolizi: stem height 37 cm, lower diameter 0.38 cm, plant type short and small, multi-stem rate about 45%. Leaves opposite or whorled, blades narrow and long, tips slightly curled, leaf color green, slightly waxy. Each plant has 2-3 bulbs and 2 scales.
Duozizhong: multi-stemmed and rather slender, with more than 3 stems accounting for 80%. Leaves opposite or alternate, narrow and long, tips slightly curled, leaves green, waxy. Each plant has more than 3 bulbs and 2 scales.
Dongbeimu: stem height 15-30 cm. Leaves opposite. Bulbs somewhat ovate to oblong, longitudinal diameter 1-1.3 cm, transverse diameter 0.7-1 cm, apex obtuse and rounded, not splitting or slightly splitting, formed by one larger scale clasped together with 1-2 smaller scales.
